Chennai: Suresh Raina's 'I am brahmin' quip draws flak
CHENNAI: Former India player Suresh Raina sparked a row after equating his upper caste identity with Chennai culture during Tamil Nadu Premier League commentary on Monday.
During the TNPL opener between Lyca Kovai Kings and Salem Spartans, Raina - who dons the Chennai Super Kings jersey in the IPL since 2008 - was asked by commentators about his long relationship with the city.
The 34-year-old replied, "I think I am also brahmin. I have been playing since 2004 in Chennai, I love the culture. I love my teammates. I have played with Anirudha Srikanth, Badri (S Badrinath), B Bhai (L Bji). We have a good administration at CSK and we have the licence to explore ourselves. I love the culture there, and I'm lucky to be part of CSK."
Users across social media platforms took little time to call Raina out. "@ImRaina you should be ashamed of yourself. It seems that you have never experienced real Chennai culture though you have been playing for many years for the Chennai team," wre one.
CSK offi als, though, tried to douse the fire and refused any comment. "We don't have anything to say at this moment," said a senior offi al. Before the 2020 IPL too, Raina courted controversy when he returned from Dubai citing "personal reasons". The CSK management wasn't happy but kept him in the 2021 side.
Whats wrong. Is Brahmin a ‘bad ‘ word. The go nment has formed committee of experts majority are brahmins.

Stupid issue. Even Stalin has his top economic advisors all Brahmins!! Prasanth Kishor another brahmin, without his strategies, Stalin would have had no chance of wng!! where are these netizens and can they ask Stalin first?
Just an innocent remark. Could have been avoided but Raina does not know anti brahmin fa ism in Chennai.
I am not sure why people are making a mountain out of a mole hill.? this is just a funny remark from a person from UP where such hatred towards brahmins for po itical gains are not practiced since there are no Dravidians there.
What is Wrong in calling yourself a Brahmin. Problem lies with people who adversely react to such issues.
Nothing wrong if he says I am brahmin. The country where we live jobs/ campas admissions/ ion seats etc decides on cast basis . So why hue and cry . India heading nowhere .
Tamil nadu is not a place for bramins to live in.
Ganesh iyer bhramin
What is wrong if you you are a bhramin .iam proud to be bhramin I will say thousand of times .who are all objection let them object.i will support sureshRaina. Be a proud bhramimn. All these dravidian po iticaian marry bhramin girls or have second wife as bhramin. Double standard
Many educated people wants casteless society but very proud to highlight their 'caste' identity in public.. shame
I am proud to be a Brahmin....this birth....next birth....every other brith...
If stating himself as Brahmin is bad... Then let every other caste be removed from Tamilnadu. People only get annoyed when a Brahmin states his caste... This double standards should stop.
As a sportperson he just needs to learn to appreciate working with everyone, regardless of caste and re gion.
is it a crime to be born a bramhin? after all raina didn't say this with a castist bent. let's not interpret which was not intended by him.
People get jealous and get into low self esteem when they hear the word Brahmin. Its not the problem of brahmins.
We need to figure out who is this anti-social person who is creating such headlines to create unrest among people
Tamils mindset needs to change.just a praise for brahmins doesn't make any illegal to other communities.tamilians should learn tolerance and present generation of tamil brahmins are quite, harmless community.
Indian - I am a Brahmin.
When will Indians really wake up!!
Calling oneself Brahmin does not demean other castes. What is the matter here?
What has being a Bhramin common to being in chennai.. Does Chennai have a Bhramin majority?
Nothing wrong in it. It's proud to say, caste, re gion,
Does this make him a better sportsman?
