Maharashtra: Caste-based names of localities to be changed

MUMBAI: The Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra on Wednesday decided to change all caste-based names of settlements, gaothans or slum pockets across the state. So names denoting castes such as Maharwada, Brahmanwada, Mali gulli and Mangwada will be scrapped and be replaced with names like Samata Nagar, Bhim Nagar and Kranti Nagar.

孟买：周三，马哈拉施特拉邦政府决定更改全邦所有根据种姓命名的定居点、gaothans或贫民窟的名称。因此，诸如Maharwada、Brahmanwada、Mali gulli和Mangwada等代表种姓的名称将被废弃，取而代之的是Samata Nagar、Bhim Nagar和Kranti Nagar。

The state cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal in this regard moved by the social justice department.

周三，邦内阁批准了社会正义部提出的这一提议。

Minister for social justice Dhananjay Munde said that since caste-based names of residential settlements did not suit a progressive state like Maharashtra, “it has been decided to change the names in order to create social harmony and enhance the feeling of national unity.” The changes will be applicable not only in the state’s rural pockets but in slum pockets in Mumbai and other urban areas too, Munde said, adding that NCP chief Sharad Pawar had also expressed his displeasure over caste-based names.

The decision will be implemented by the urban development department in urban areas and by the rural development department in villages. A government resolution (GR) in this regard will be issued soon, an official said.
