Maharashtra Bhushan Award ceremony turns deadly; 11 die, over 600 suffer heatstroke in Kharghar

NAVI MUMBAI: At least 11 people have died from dehydration and heatstroke and scores hospitalised after attending the government-sponsored Maharashtra Bhushan award ceremony in an open ground at Navi Mumbai on a blazing Sunday.

Chief minister Eknath Shinde’s office has confirmed 11 deaths while officials pegged the unconfirmed number at 13. Eight of the dead are women, mostly elderly. The casualties may rise as some of those hospitalised are believed to be critical with cardiac problems and fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

A crowd of lakhs sat under a scorching sun for over five hours (8am to 1pm) at the Kharghar International Corporate Park grounds while the award was being conferred on social activist Dattatreya Narayan alias Appasaheb Dharmadhikari. Union home minister Amit Shah, Shinde, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Kapil Patil were on the dais, which was covered, along with other VIPs.

Later, Shinde rushed to Kamothe’s MGM Hospital to visit patients. He announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for next of kin of the deceased.

Lakhs of people had come and the programme was going on smoothly, but in the end, this happened,” he said. “I don’t want to politicise this…I want to help those needing treatment. Some have to be shifted to other hospitals and that is being arranged. A deputy municipal commissioner of Panvel Municipal Corporation has been deputed for the job. He will coordinate with the relatives of the patients and give them updates,” said Shinde. “At least 50 people were admitted to hospitals and 24 were still undergoing treatment while some have been discharged after treatment.”

The organizers of this event have lost their brains or what. In this blazing heat they did not even provide basic shade to people. Ideally, there should have been a water booth every nook and corner. And shade with proper fans and ventilation system should have been there. In our country, no one cares for the poor or downtrodden, irrespective of political parties. They are all looking through their personal gains and as a result the lives of the poor & downtrodden are taken for granted.
