India sees 88 rape cases a day; conviction rate below 30%
NEW DELHI: On September 14 this year, a 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gangraped in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras by four upper-caste men. The incident caused widespread outrage and brought the focus on just how pervasive sexual violence against women is in our country. The woman sustained several injuries and died nearly 14 days later. To make matters worse, the police cremated her in the dead of night without the knowledge and consent of the family.
The Supreme Court termed the incident ‘horrible and shocking’ while hearing a plea for probe by the CBI and SIT into the alleged gangrape on Tuesday.
However, this isn’t the lone incident that has shaken up the country. Several incidences like Nirbhaya rape case (2012), Unnao rape case (2017), Kathaua rape case (2018) and the Hyderabad rape cum murder case (2019) expose the grim reality of bestial sexual crimes against women in the country. A survey by Thomas Reuters Foundation in 2018 ranked India as the most dangerous country for women.
Crimes against women have been steadily rising over the years. According to the latest NCRB report, 2019 saw over 4 lakh reported cases of crimes committed against women, up from 3.78 lakh in 2018 and 3.59 lakh cases in 2017.
NCRB reported 32,033 rape cases which translates to a shocking 88 rape cases a day -- and this is just 10% of all crimes against women. Experts say that picture could be far worse as most such crimes go unreported in the country.
Uttar Pradesh holds the worst record
NCRB data shows that in 2019, Uttar Pradesh topped the states in crimes against women with a whopping 59,853 cases, followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra with 41,550 and 37,144 cases respectively.
Rajasthan tops in rape cases
In terms of rape incidences, Rajasthan fared worst with nearly 6,000 reported cases. Uttar Pradesh ranked second with over 3,000 cases.
No effect of Nirbhaya judgment
The recent incident proves that the execution of the convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case (that took place this year) had no effect on criminals. When the execution took place, it was assumed that it would send a strong message to perpetrators of such crimes, but the recent incidents have proved it otherwise.
One reason for this is poor conviction rate and the long road to justice. In 2018 and 2019, the conviction rate for rape was below 30%. Which means out of 100 cases only 30 saw convictions. Absence of forensic labs, fast-track courts and investigators are also partly responsible for this.

If you take crime rate per population then Assam, Delhi and Kerala are no 1, 2, and 3. You need consider the fact that UP has 21 crore population where as Kerala is having just 3 crore population. Just highlighting the total case is the not the correct way of measuring. If you consider crime per population UP is having one of the lowest crime.

How many of the Rape cases are really true? Fact is, Women lodge Rape cases instead of Cheating cases. This forms the bulk of the false cases foisted on men. Thus the poor conviction rate. The only way you can get the Conviction rate up is by putting women to file false cases to jail similar in term to the one that men have to undergo.
To avoid this there should be fear in the minds of culprits who commit these crimes. For that the criminals should be punished stringently and quickly.
imran s maknojia
India is a failed state. It cannot protect all its citizens.
After completion of Ram Mandir rape will be legal in India.
All women are in danger in India , thanks to govt / administrations / politicians . If Capital Punishment is not implemented on fast track for the rapist then dont expect miracles to happen .
And according to Modi the whole world is looking up at us.
When false cases are reported then conviction rate will always remain low. Blunder misuse of rape laws is being done by unscrupulous women to settle scores for different reasons.
LOL forget rape, few years back a girl in delhi was stabbed in broad day light some 32 times and we enuch indians passed and just watched. Just imagine evn if 10 guys would have jumped on the attacker the girl would still be alive. Im sorry but indians are gutless.
Lax leadership ineffective laws useless IPC,horrible delays in legal punishment system, almost every step designed to favour criminals.
Another fake news to defame Yogi and UP govt. Yogi is currently working on making dalit rape legal for thakur's. Once that is approved the number will go down.........
So Yogi has achieved for UP the status of rape capital.. what else can we expect from a CM who is a goon..
very bad ... mentality has to change ...
The solution is education and that too moral education and empathy. We are not a developed society just because we can launch mission to Mars. We are developed society if we behave in a civilised manner with all. Women constitute half of humanity and of we treat half of humanity this way I am not sure if we are human. We have to learn and respect every human. Lastly rape should be trated as culpable homicide. Rapists should accordingly be punished.
A more strict law is required like Singapore where the culprit is punished with lashes to send a good message to the Society and then of course death or lifetime imprisonment...The lashes should be given in front of public on their buttocks....
This make Indian justice system mockery.
So much rape cases and other social evils portray a very bad color of Indians. Rampant sex-mania among Indians speaks their ill mentality. India is greatly in need of bringing reforms to curb this menace by severe punishment. For punishing the accused of this crime flogging may work wonder.
More than 50% of the rape cases are fake because women are taking revenge as their partner is ready for marriage.
I am sure this number is missing some zeroes
Rape is the national sport of India ...
