Follow the construction journey as this railway cuts across Kenya’s vast plains — passing through national parks, remote grasslands, and rugged terrain where traditional rail construction would be far more difficult.

Inside the project, engineers had to solve complex challenges including soil stabilization, heat expansion, wildlife protection, and large-scale logistics while coordinating thousands of workers and heavy machines along the entire corridor.

Completed in 2017 after just three years of construction, the railway dramatically reduced travel time between Mombasa and Nairobi while transforming regional transportation and trade.

Look at the foolish Chinese built Tanzania Zambia railroad. It was built in the period China was one of the poorest country in the world. And lost about 60 foolish Chinese lifes in the construction process. Where is the bay back? May be in the year 3000. The smart unelected politician gave stuffs away, the poor Chinese citizens paid for the gifts. Most of the loans to the poor countries ended up as grants because the loans are not paid. Sure created jobs in China who ended up paying for these jobs.

看看当年中国援建的坦赞铁路有多不值,那时候中国还是世界上最贫穷的国家之一,却有近60名国人在施工中牺牲。回报在哪里?恐怕要等到3000年了。所谓的精英政客慷国民之慨,让普通百姓为对外援助买单。给贫困国家的贷款大多无法收回,最终变成赠予,国内看似创造了就业,实则还是由中国人自己承担成本。

​@lungduan240 I can understand your frustration my brother. As a Kenyan, I can assure you, the case of Kenya is different. It was aloan and we are repaying it. Through it all, China is getting a lot of money back. May be they should invest it now in the poorer side of China now. But all the same you know such cooperation opened doors for so much of Chinese exports to Kenya

I do not understand why African nations take loans to build infrastructure. They have engineers trained in all these developed countries. Why not just purchase the equipment and do it themselves?

China has built hundreds of thousands of kilometers of rail networks in recent decades. There is probably no other country with as much expertise in this area.
Should Africans first make the same mistakes that China made, in order to perhaps have a functioning rail network in 20 years' time

@arnolsi There are several countries with the expertise to build high speed rail in Africa. Spain is just one of several that could do it. But Spain, like most of those other countries, would never build this railroad in Kenya because its simply bad business. The RR will never pay for itself and Spain has no geopolitical interest in extending huge loans that countries will never be able to pay back.

有不少国家具备在非洲建设高铁的技术能力,西班牙就是其中之一。但西班牙和其他大多数国家一样,绝不会在肯尼亚修建这条铁路,因为这完全无利可图。这条铁路根本无法收回成本,西班牙也没有地缘政治动机去发放这些贫困国家根本无力偿还的巨额贷款。

Well doneby the Chinese! I'm so impressed and thankful that they put it on pylons, all the way through the nature reserve. High enough, that even elephants and giraffes can pass under it. Because they could otherwise be cut off from water and eachother, inbreed and cause accidents when crossing the rail tracks or standing on them in big herds.

In Context of Kenya such a huge landbank and vast horizon, Kenya do not need to elevate either railway or road above ground?! Why? China just to escalate the unnessary price by putting piers and segmental box-girders? Why not lay on the ground will do what?

This railway was a scam. The previous president influenced the Chinese to build the railway to his land in the mainland so he can build a dry port and tax Kenyans and other countries for goods entering the country. Plus, spending so much money (through loans) you would think you would get value for money. A dual-carriage electrified railway which would stand the human population increase and technological needs for the next 50yrs. But this won't be the case. With only 4 passenger trains running per 24hrs (per day) you cannot get a ticket on demand. You have to wait days to get a ticket. It really tells a story of myopic leadership by African leaders who do not exercise best practice in leading their countries.

这条铁路就是一场骗局。肯尼亚前总统施压中方,将铁路修到自己名下的土地上,以便建设内陆港,向肯尼亚民众和入境的外国货物征税。耗费巨额贷款修建,本应物有所值,打造一条能满足未来50年人口增长和技术需求的双线电气化铁路,结果却截然相反。全天仅开行4趟客运列车,车票一票难求,往往需要等待数天。这充分暴露了非洲领导人目光短浅、治理国家缺乏专业能力的问题。
