Amid threats to ‘chicken’s neck’, India to take rail corridor underground

GUWAHATI: India’s plan to secure the strategic “chicken’s neck” corridor to the Northeast from Bengal includes laying underground rail tracks through the nearly 40km stretch flanked by Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Monday.
Vaishnaw said the Budget contains a proposal to expand railway link between the region and the rest of the country to four tracks, fulfilling a long-felt need. Northeast Frontier Railway GM Chetan Shrivastava said the underground stretch would run from Tin Mile Haat to Rangapani stations within Bengal.

Decision to take the tracks underground stems from threats — overt and covert — to target the chicken’s neck, which is barely 25km wide at the narrowest point. Concerns over the corridor, being seen as India’s Achilles heel, grew after the fall of Hasina govt in Bangladesh, with some groups speaking about “choking the chicken’s neck” to cut off the Northeast. Voices have framed the region as part of their vision of a “greater Bangladesh”. Dhaka’s outreach towards China is another red flag.
During the 2017 Doklam stand-off, military planners had talked about the vulnerability of the Siliguri stretch of the corridor. Any disruption here could isolate NE, severing supply lines and impeding movement of troops.
“Taking the tracks underground is part of the strategy to ensure connectivity even in times of crises,” an official said.
此次将线路改建为地下铁路,源于“鸡脖子”走廊面临的明、暗双重打击威胁,该走廊最窄处宽度仅25公里。孟加拉国哈西娜政府下台后,外界对这一被视作印度“阿喀琉斯之踵”的走廊担忧加剧,部分组织扬言要“扼住鸡脖子”,切断印度东北部与本土的联系,还有声音将该区域划入其所谓“大孟加拉国”的构想范围。此外,孟加拉国向中国示好的举动,也是印度的一大安全警示。
2017年洞朗对峙期间,军方规划部门就曾指出该走廊西里古里段的防御薄弱性。此处交通一旦中断,印度东北部将陷入孤立,物资补给线被切断,军队调动也会受阻。
一名官员表示:“将铁路线路地下化,是相关战略部署的一部分,目的是确保即便在危机状态下,区域交通连通性也不会中断。”

Building a tunnel is a very wise idea , ensuring proper secrecy on its route and laying it out at a proper depth under tough岩石 or mountains would secure it from all sorts of external threats . Fielding batteries of SAMs on either side of the tunnel with a close watch to the approach roads , creating a self sustaining eco system in the northeast would greatly favour the nations security .

From the day, BD rose in revolt I read every published report on the revolt. Corruption was mentioned. Falsification of Election was mentioned. Mass murder was mentioned . And two days after the shooting at Pahalgam , the warning was mentioned "If India attacked Pakistan BD would attack India"

People are poor and growing poorer. Investors are shying away from India for good reason - there is no market in India because of lack of purchasing power and India cannot compete with China for the export market.

The Government needed an excuse to sign a Contract to build a Tunnel. It could have used a Railway-related excuse, but trusting the dumbness of brain-washed it gave BD as excuse.

明明是前顾问提前预警,5月17日这家报纸却刊出标题《中国计划扼守印度鸡脖子?》,这不是很可笑吗?”
政府只是想找个借口签隧道修建合同,明明可以用铁路建设的理由,却拿孟加拉国当幌子,赌被洗脑的民众不会识破。

The Siliguri corridor ("Chicken's Neck") is a very narrow portion having just about 20 kms between Nepal and Bangladesh, this spot or the "neck" is easy to wring or squeeze by the external parties to block access to the NE (North Eastern) part of India.
So, India should take-over the Northern part of Bangladesh straight from Pirijpur in West Bengal to Mahendraganj in Meghalaya, in order to make the corridor wider and to have more access to the 7 states in the NE part of India.

Need to reconsider this wasteful option with option to widen chicken neck to Yonus neck, canceling oil aid to Bangladesh or have Bangladesh pay for it with steep tax on import as well as export tax.
