Canada’s 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles is under serious review. Prime Minister Mark Carney, meeting with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, expressed gratitude for Moe’s China trip to push back against Beiing’s retaliation. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, speaking before today’s cabinet meeting, confirmed Ottawa is actively reviewing both the EV tariff and Canada’s ZEV mandates.

The stakes are high. China has already hit Canada’s canola farmers with heavy tariffs in response, putting pressure on prairie provinces. Now Carney and Joly are signaling that a policy shift could be coming. Removing the EV tariff would bring relief for farmers, open Canada to cheaper EVs, and even create space for deals with Chinese automakers to manufacture cars in Canada — creating thousands of jobs.

This would also mark a clear break with Donald Trump’s trade strategy, which Carney no longer has reason to follow as Trump threatens Canada’s economy. The debate has shifted. The EV tariff once looked untouchable — but now, Canada may be preparing to lift it.

Cheaper EV's would be great for people who live in rural areas, but if cheap cars are suddenly available, how many cars would be added to the traffic in Toronto? Ten thousand more cars on the roads overnight? The traffic doesn't move as it is, there are consequences to every move, and that is not being discussed.

Not only that, but think of how much better the air will be in large cities like Toronto and Montreal. Montreal gets smog warnings throughout the winter! Electric cars in a country with abundant hydroelectric power, it's a no brainer

@jeremycoyle2782 EVs use is making drastic and noticeable improvement to the air quality in high population density Chinese cities like Shanghai and Beiing already. It's not just the improvement in air quality but also reduction of noise pollution you have to keep in mind. I saw a video by an American blogger who recorded the video sitting by a busy road in Shanghai having coffee, he noticed how quite the environment was despite the traffic.

Right. Last month in the US, Tesla outsold the next top four EV competitors combined. In BC there are so many Teslas - it's just weird. So - clearly a good idea to make a great product that's in high demand, too expensive for Canadiens to buy.

Trump USA, China, and Russia have well demonstrated imperialist tendencies and aversion to the rule of law. Countries have interests and no one cares about the people of Canada except the people of Canada. Hopefully Trump's BS will be mitigated in the US mid-terms in later 2026 but remains to be seen how American voters will decide. China is a large market, Canada has resources China is interested in, and there is give and take on both sides. They have manipulated and interfered with Canadian politics and social dynamics to gain advantage and control and something Canadians should critically assess especially in social media.
