Reports say, the Chinese military has developed a new missile - a hypersonic glide vehicle - which can be used to target high-value targets thousands of miles away. Palki Sharma tells you more.

In war, distance can be a defense. But China is trying to change that. It has built a new missile that can find and hit targets thousands of kilometers away.

That's what a new report says. It talks about a missile called the hypersonic glide weapon. The hypersonic glide weapon. How does it work? First of all, it is incredibly fast. It can travel at more than five times the speed of sound. That's what makes it hypersonic. Then comes the glide part. The weapon is launched high into the sky by a rocket. Then it separates and glides through the atmosphere towards its target. But unlike a conventional ballistic missile, this one can maneuver along the way. It can change course and that makes its path much harder to predict. It also makes the weapon much harder to track and intercept.

Having said that, you cannot dismiss this new weapon or China's military capability for that matter. It has been building a vast and rapidly expanding missile force. How big? The largest in the world. And they're adding to the stockpile as we speak. Let me show you numbers from 2024. China had at least 3,150 ballistic missiles. Remember, a ballistic missile is one of the most powerful weapons in the world. It can travel long distances, fly faster than the speed of sound, and carry nuclear warheads.

China is also building cruise missiles. These can be launched from the ground. China is said to have around 300 cruise missiles. And I repeat, these numbers are from two years ago. There's a good chance that the latest figures are higher because China has been placing more orders. It's hard to get the exact numbers. So, experts usually track signs and patterns, signs for activity on the ground, at manufacturing sites, and at key bases. And here is what they found last year. This is a report on rocket factories in China. There are some 136 such facilities. You heard that right. China has 136 rocket factories. More than 60% of these are active. There were signs of activity or factory expansion, more infrastructure being added. So, it's safe to assume that China has been ram up missile production in a big way.

And while this may be aimed largely at the United States, this missile push has implications for India too. We share a long and disputed border with China. There are multiple points of friction. So any new weapon in Beiing's arsenal changes India's security calculus too.

尽管这一轮导弹扩充主要针对美国，但也会对印度产生影响。中印边界线漫长且存在领土争端，双方多处存在矛盾摩擦。因此，中国武器库中每一款新式武器，都会改变印度的安全考量。
