NEW DELHI: DRDO on Friday evening launched the maiden test of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) off the Odisha coast.

“Though the test-launch doesn’t look like that of an Agni-6 missile, the missile tested today is of ICBM category,” a defence source confirmed to TOI. However, DRDO has yet to officially announce the missile test.

Days ago, TOI had reported that DRDO was going to launch a missile test of ICBM category.

Only four countries — US, Russia, China and North Korea — possess ICBM technology and have deployed ICBMs with over 12,000-km range. France and Britain possess operational nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) technology. If India perfects ICBM capability, any country in the world, including the US, will come into its missile strike range.

一名防务消息人士向《印度时报》证实：“此次试射的导弹看似并非烈火 - 6 型导弹，但当天试射型号属于洲际弹道导弹范畴。” 不过，印度国防研究与发展组织尚未官方官宣此次导弹试射。

就在数日前，《印度时报》曾报道，印度国防研究与发展组织计划开展一型洲际弹道导弹试射。

目前仅有美国、俄罗斯、中国、朝鲜四个国家掌握洲际弹道导弹技术，并部署了射程超 12000 公里的洲际弹道导弹。法国和英国则拥有可投入实战的海基核弹道导弹（潜射弹道导弹）技术。一旦印度完全掌握洲际弹道导弹能力，包括美国在内的全球所有国家，都将落入其导弹打击射程之内。

While Russia operates the longest-range missiles, including the RS-28 Sarmat and R-29RMU2.1 Layner, both capable of exceeding 12,000 km, China has fielded DF-41 (Dongfeng-41), which is considered a top-tier ICBM with a confirmed range of 12,000–15,000 km. The US possesses the LGM-30G Minuteman III and the upcoming LGM-35 Sentinel, which meet or exceed intercontinental distance requirements. North Korea had in the past tested missiles with ranges nearing 10,000 km–15,000 km

俄罗斯列装全球射程顶尖的导弹，包括萨尔马特RS-28与莱纳R-29RMU2.1，两款导弹射程均可突破12000公里；中国已部署东风-41洲际弹道导弹，属于顶尖洲际导弹，公认射程达12000至15000公里。美国拥有民兵三号LGM-30G，以及即将列装的哨兵LGM-35洲际导弹，射程均达到甚至超过洲际标准。朝鲜此前也曾试射射程接近10000至15000公里的导弹。
