'I'm Indian': Tripura student's last words before he was killed in a racial attack; protests erupt seeking justice

DEHRADUN: A 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, who confronted a group of men hurling racial slurs at him and his younger brother, died in a Dehradun hospital on Friday after fighting for his life for over 14 days. The stabbing happened on Dec 9, minutes after Anjel Chakma said, "We are not Chinese... We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?" The six men allegedly responded with brutal violence.

What began as a regular grocery run to the local market in the Selaqui area of Uttarakhand's capital city turned into a fatal confrontation that evening.

Anjel and his brother Michael, both students in Dehradun for over a year, were stopped and taunted by a group of men who allegedly referred to them in derogatory terms. When Anjel calmly stood his ground, the situation turned uglier.

安杰尔与弟弟迈克尔已在德拉敦求学一年有余，当天二人被一伙男子拦下并遭到嘲讽，对方用侮辱性言辞辱骂他们。安杰尔冷静据理、坚定立场，事态随即进一步恶化。

Michael would later tell police and friends how his brother calmly but firmly corrected them. That assertion, of identity and dignity, was met with knives. "Soon after Anjel replied, they attacked him and his brother while hurling abuses," said a friend of Anjel's, who remained at the hospital through the two weeks that followed.

"Anjel suffered serious injuries to his neck and spine. Michael is also injured and still in a serious condition."

The friend requested anonymity, but his voice carried anger and disbelief. "He was one of the calmest, friendliest people. We're all broken by what happened." Anjel's body was flown to Agartala on Saturday, as Tripura erupted in anger. His family was assisted by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, chairman of Tipra Motha Party and a member of the erstwhile Tripura royal family, who had been in touch with the family since the day of the incident and had supported his medical treatment.

迈克尔事后向警方和友人回忆，当时哥哥始终冷静却态度坚决地纠正对方，而这份捍卫身份与尊严的表态，换来的却是利刃相向。安杰尔的一位友人在医院全程陪护两周，其表示：“安杰尔话音刚落，这伙人便一边辱骂，一边对兄弟俩动手行凶。”

该友人要求匿名，言语间满是愤怒与难以置信：“他性格最为温和友善，这场悲剧让我们所有人都悲痛欲绝。”特里普拉邦民众怒火四起之际，安杰尔的遗体已于周六空运至阿加尔塔拉。特里普拉民族党主席、前特里普拉王室成员普拉迪奥·比克拉姆·马尼克亚·德巴尔马，自事发当日便与安杰尔家人保持联系，不仅为其医疗救治提供支持，目前也在协助其家人处理后续事宜。

Speaking to TOI, Debbarma said on Saturday, "It's tragic that the patriotic people of the northeast are called Chinese and attacked. Those who hurl racist slurs forget that it is because of the brave people of the northeast that China cannot enter the country. These incidents don't just hurt families. They divide our people. And when we are divided, we are vulnerable. We don't want that. We want justice."

德巴尔马周六接受《印度时报》采访时表示：“东北民众满怀爱国之心，却被说成是中国人并遭袭击，实在令人痛心。那些人忘了，正因为有东北民众的英勇坚守，东大才无法越境。这类事件伤害的不只是一个个家庭，更在割裂我们的国民共识。一旦我们内部分裂，国家便会陷入脆弱境地，这不是我们想看到的，我们只求伸张正义。”

The internment of Chinese Indians was the forced relocation and incarceration of 3,000 Chinese Indians in an internment camp in Deoli, Rajasthan during Sino-Indian War in 1962. They were detained without trial as per the Defence of India Act, 1962. The internees were released in a phase by phase manner until the last internee was released in 1967. After the internment, many Chinese Indians (Indians with Chinese ancestry) were resettled with equal rights, and some were deported or coerced to leave India. Nearly all internees had their properties sold off or looted.

North Indians have superiority mindset. They have lack of respect for North east Indians and South Indians. Most racist people in the world. Not sure why they are disrespectful despite running their states in the most pathetic manner. Total pollution - Air, Water, Noise, Earth. Filth everywhere. Over population, not able to attract industry. If central government from 1947 -2014 did not neglect north east states and did some development, then poor North East people dont even have to step in to North. I don't want to talk about Moghals.

This is not a one off case. I have lived in Dehradun for many years and very familiar with Selaqui. Drunken hooliganism is rampant among local youth and students have been attacked in the past as well. I was ho that with a better administration the law and order situation will improve but looks like it didn't. But now I hope the local government takes very strict actions. It is very easy to know who are the culprits as they are mostly the locals who live in that area. Selaqui is outside of Dehradun city and perhaps under Vikas Nagar tensil. This will require the intervention of CM in order to restore trust in law and order
