'Felt completely trapped': Indian student scammed in US by imposters who posed as ICE officers, told her she would be deported

“感觉完全被困住了”：印度留学生在美国遭冒牌ICE官员诈骗，被告知将被驱逐

Shreya Bedi, an Indian student, was deceived by scammers who posed as immigration officers who told her that she was violating immigration laws. The imposters forced her into purchasing $5000 worth of gift cards as 'bond' payments to avoid arrest and deportation. Bedi came to the US on an F-1 visa in 2022 to pursue a Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction at Indiana University Bloomington, Newsweek reported.

Bedi said she received a phone call on May 29 in which the scammers who posed as ICE agents told her that she was violating immigration laws and would be arrested and deported.

"He gave me his name and badge number and told me to verify his office details by going to ice.gov and looking up the office in Maryland. I could confirm it was the same phone number he was calling from," Bedi said.

The scammers told Bedi that her phone was being monitored and she could not call anyone. A second scammer called posing to be from the Olympia Police Department saying that there was a warrant for her arrest.

"I felt completely trapped because they kept me on the phone for three hours straight, repeatedly warning me that hanging up or contacting anyone would violate my case and make things worse.

诈骗分子告诉贝迪，她的手机正被监听，不能联系任何人。随后另一名诈骗分子致电，冒充奥林匹亚警察局人员，称已对她发出逮捕令。

“我感觉完全被困住了，他们让我连续三个小时不挂电话，反复警告我，挂断或联系任何人都会妨碍案件处理，让情况变得更糟。”

I was too scared to risk it," Bedi said.

The scammers asked her to buy Apple and Target gift cards totaling $5,000 and to share the codes over the phone. The scammers told her a police officer would collect the cards and bond papers the next day, but that call never came. "They put me through hours of psychological torture, making me believe I was going to be deported and arrested," Bedi said.

The scammers knew everything about her, her port of entry, academic background, which city in India she is from etc.

“我当时太害怕了，不敢冒险。”贝迪说。

诈骗分子要求她购买总计5000美元的苹果和塔吉特礼品卡，并通过电话告知卡密。他们告诉贝迪，次日会有警察来收取礼品卡和保释文件，但后续电话从未打来。“他们让我遭受了数小时的心理折磨，我以为自己真的会被逮捕和驱逐。”贝迪说。

这些诈骗分子清楚她的所有信息：入境口岸、学历背景、印度家乡城市等。

Bedi is now trying to raise funds on GoFundMe. "You always have the right to hang up and call a lawyer, government agencies almost never call you directly; they send official mail," she said. "No legitimate government agency will ever ask for gift cards, bank details, or your Social Security number over the phone. If someone asks for any of these things, it's definitely a scam."

"As international students, we don't fully understand how the system works here, which makes us easy targets. I feel embarrassed that I fell for this, but I want others to learn from my mistake."

Its high time India takes action against these scam centers. Its always the low level people working these centers are arrested and the main owners are left scott free. The owners go and setup a new firm again. If these folks are not stopped , in future it would become an organized crime and hard to tacke them. There are tons of them, few months ago, a US hacking firm busted an Indian scam center, whose owner had pictures of him with Indian high profile embassy folks in from Tokyo and current govt officials. The cops busted their scam center and the owner was left free. He went to start another company now in Noida, its very much active and he has two additional partners now. The only change now is, he made his FB profile private. When is the Govt. take stern actions against these scam centers. Hopefully in near future Trump enforces our government to take action.

印度早该打击这些诈骗中心了。每次都是抓底层打工的，幕后老板却逍遥法外，转头又开新公司。再不制止，将来会变成有组织犯罪，更难收拾。这种例子太多了，几个月前一家美国网络安全公司端了个印度诈骗中心，老板跟东京的印度高级外交官和现任政府官员都有合影。警察查了诈骗中心，老板却没被抓，现在去诺伊达又开了家公司，生意很活跃，还多了两个合伙人，只是把脸书资料设成私密了。政府到底什么时候才能严厉打击这些诈骗中心？希望特朗普能逼着印度政府采取行动。
