A veteran former designer involved in the development of the J-10 fighter jet series has unveiled some of the secrets behind the iconic Chinese-made jet, which has recently been in the spotlight for its role in international conflicts.
一位参与过歼-10战斗机系列研发的资深前设计师,揭开了这款中国制造的标志性战机背后的一些秘密。最近,该战机因在国际冲突中的惊人表现而备受关注。

“多少钱一架?”“性能参数如何?”……马来西亚兰卡威国际海事和航空展上,一架歼—10CE飞机模型前,围着许多“询价”的参观者。
近3000公里外,在位于四川成都的成飞航空主题教育基地,1∶1全尺寸歼—10飞机模型前,首飞试飞员雷强被慕名前来的市民游客围住,又是签名,又是合影。
自1998年原型机试飞成功至今,歼—10系列战机已在蓝天翱翔近30年。其研制成功,标志着中国实现了自主研制、具有自主知识产权的世界先进水平战机的历史性跨越。
立项之初,由于歼—10设计方案采用的新技术超过60%,技术跨度大,研发难度高,许多人并不看好。
在宋文骢带领下,设计团队精益求精,实现了一个个重大突破。
图纸有了,技术攻下来了,接力棒交到了成都飞机工业公司(中国航空工业集团成都飞机工业公司前身,以下简称“成飞”)的手中。歼—10原型机的生产组装正式开始。
“歼—10是全世界第一架直接采用放宽静安定度状态首飞的电传飞控飞机。”戴川介绍,当时,试飞的国际通行做法是“三步走”:用配重把飞机变成传统的静安定飞机,安全试飞后再调整配重变成中立安定的飞机,待安全试飞后去掉配重再用放宽静安定度状态试飞。歼—10首飞一飞冲天,缩短了中国航空人的赶路时间,也为世界先进技术试飞立了新规。
定型试飞持续6年,累计完成3200余架次极限测试,歼—10飞机从未摔过一次,创造了全球三代飞机定型试飞不摔一架飞机的纪录。

I'm so sick of people saying the Chinese could only copy. They've been innovating since the 1980s, but they've been doing it incrementally. The J-10 itself is a good example, as content creator mentions. It shows the Chinese approach to many tech problems: they identify the most promising tech and develop it, even though the first products will be inadequate. They then build on the first products, heading toward the original vision, and they get better. And better. With each iteration. Incrementally. Reactive 'China always copies' nonsense really shits me.

The earliest J-10A models used the Russian AL-31FN turbofan engine, which was originally designed for the Sukhoi Su-27 series. China didn’t have a reliable high-thrust engine of its own at the time.
•Some avionics and radar tech were also influenced by Russian designs or licensed tech. Even the air intake and aerodynamic setup have been compared to elements of the Israeli Lavi (which itself had U.S. influence).
Over the years, China pushed hard to localize every part of the jet. By the time they released the J-10B and especially the J-10C, a lot had changed:
• The WS-10B engine, a fully Chinese design, began replacing the Russian AL-31FN in later versions.
•The radar was upgraded to a Chinese-made AESA (active electronically scanned array) system.
•Avionics, cockpit displays, and electronic warfare systems were all made in China.

Fun Fact
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, China’s economy was still develo and the military budget was nowhere near what it is today. The J-10 was a high-stakes project — not only technologically ambitious, but also chronically underfunded.
Many engineers and developers at Chengdu Aircraft Corporation were passionate about the project, but the money just wasn’t flowing like it needed to. There are real stories of designers and technicians having to take second jobs — literally working on J-10 during the day and then moonlighting in other roles to make ends meet.
They didn’t even have access to top-tier equipment all the time. Some facilities were outdated, and foreign tech was heavily restricted due to arms embargoes. This led to a lot of improvisation, trial and error, and sheer determination.
One of the lead designers, Song Wencong (宋文骢), is a bit of a legend. He was known for his dedication to Chinese aviation, and even though the project seemed doomed a few times, he and his team just kept pushing. Song himself was so respected that after his death in 2016, the J-10 was flown in tribute.
By all means, the J-10 should have flopped: no cash, heavy tech limitations, and zero combat-tested experience in building something this modern. And yet... it worked. It didn’t just work — it became a cornerstone of Chinese air power, and now it’s even being exported.

按理说,歼-10本应失败:没资金、技术限制多、毫无建造现代战机的实战经验。但它不仅成功了,还成了中国空中力量的基石,如今甚至用于出口。

The j10 chief designer had to sell noodles after work, because of lack of fund. The chendu aircraft industrial corp had to make washing machines to fund the j10 project. China was poor, but that's where China came from.
