Africa's biggest iron ore project, Simandou in Guinea, is getting its heavy-haul locomotives from a factory in Marhowra, Bihar. Why there, and how Indian are they?

The Marhowra plant was set up in 2015 as a joint venture between Indian Railways and GE, now Wabtec, to build 1,000 diesel locomotives for India, just as India decided to electrify almost its whole network. This documentary follows how that factory ended up building around 150 locomotives for Simandou's 600 km railway, a line financed and built largely by Chinese companies.

Should India aim to export whole railway projects like China does, or stick to building the machines for them?

GE diesel engine is more suited for long heavy haul through remote area. Rail need strong foundation which the CRRC has the expertise. To have a successful transport system you have to rely on both entity strength.

India purchases the technology always and develops it for itself as per it's needs unlike mere copying....India doesn't take others design but controls it's own design even though the technology based may be other countries.... No one can match the Indian R&D

印度引进技术之后，会根据自身需求自主改进，不是单纯抄袭。印度不会直接照搬别人的图纸，哪怕底层技术源自国外，最终设计主导权掌握在自己手里。印度的研发实力没人能比得上。

China has 50000km high speed train lines in China and I was very impressed when I visited China a few months ago from the US and the trains are so modern, comfortable and quiet. China is so modern, clean and safe. Subway stations in China are even more modern than airports in the US and Europe!
