Two German leaders, two parallel missions across Asia. While President Frank-Walter Steinmeier sought to reinforce ties with China in Beiing, Chancellor Friedrich Merz toured Japan, South Korea and Singapore, promoting closer cooperation among what he calls the world's "middle powers." Together, the visits highlight Berlin's effort to lower risks without decoupling from China. Our correspondent Giulia Saudelli explains the strategy behind Germany's two-track approach.

五年前，德国对华贸易还保有大额顺差，后来局势就变了。很明显，变化的一方不是中国，是俄乌战争加上德国自己的选择，才造成现在的局面。自己决策失误，不能怪到中国头上。

而且日本、韩国、新加坡这些海洋国家，和身为大陆国家的德国，本来就没有根本的共同利益。所谓理念相近的伙伴？纯属幻想。

Couldn't of put it better myself. I think Germany should remember why the two plus four treaty was set up. Somehow Germany has become second, only to the USA as by far the largest provider of weapons to both Israel and Ukraine. Somehow, without any questions asked they have become the strongest military, diplomatic and financial supporter within Europe of wars and ethno-nationalist regimes.

China is the world’s biggest exporter of rare earths, permanent magnets, APIs, solar panels, EVs, batteries, wind turbines etc…, and not only Germany, but the US, Japan, South Korea etc… also depend on these crucial Chinese exports. So, what Germany is trying to get from Japan, South Korea as “alternative products” ?
Further, Germany cannot co-produce weapons with Japan and South Korea because these 2 latter rely on Chinese rare earths and magnets plus other minerals. China has already banned export of these rare earths/raw materials to Japan !
Germany is probably testing grounds in Japan to have an office of NATO established in Tokyo ? Germany is playing the very dangerous “ 2-headed Snake” ‘s games in Asia …
