Wherever Narendra Modi travels, he comes home with a medal, and much of the world's media treats him as a statesman and a voice of the Global South. Aakar Patel, columnist, chair of Amnesty International India and author of Price of the Modi Years, joins me for the first time to separate the image from the record. Aakar describes a foreign policy with two registers. One is theater performed for validation abroad, which harder leaders have learned to exploit. The other is the external face of Hindutva, which explains the fixation on Pakistan and the embrace of Israel.

专栏作家、大赦国际印度分会主席，《莫迪时代的代价》一书作者阿卡尔・帕特尔指出，印度外交政策存在两套叙事。一套是对外表演性质的外交秀，用来博取国际认可，一些强硬派领导人早已学会利用这一点。另一套是印度教民族主义的对外面孔，这也解释了为何印度紧盯巴基斯坦，同时亲近以色列。

莫迪出访海外，不断塑造 “世界导师” 形象，宣传印度是全球南方代表、G20 领袖，谋求联合国安理会常任理事国席位。但这些口号只是喊喊而已，缺少落地路线，没有可行方案争取进入安理会。海外各国对此心知肚明，授予他各类奖章更多是一种外交客套，用来拉拢这个新兴大国，并非真心认可印度这个国家。

莫迪遭遇抗议，声望受挫。一旦莫迪卸任，真正掌权的会是国民志愿团 RSS，这套体系制度化，比莫迪个人更危险。

Modi taught Indians how to brag and celebrating before any real achievement of significance. Playing number game alone does not tell the whole story since India has the largest population in the world.
For instance, drop to the world 6th largest GDP ( after bragging of being the 4th largest not so long ago), its GDP per capita is still under USD 3,000. That's a lower middle income tier under the UN categorization, for a self proclaimed superpower. India declaring holidays for a brief and lost air warfare stunned me too for a so called Democracy and a Freedom of Press country which they are proud of. Equal of China, what a joke! At least not for another half century to catch up, only if China stops progressing from today. By India's track record of development and construction schedules, I am having some serious doubts again.

莫迪教会了印度人，还没取得重大实质成果就开始吹嘘、就开始庆祝。印度是全球人口第一大国，只玩数字游戏说明不了全部情况。

举个例子，不久前还吹嘘自己GDP排全球第四，现在掉到第六，人均GDP还不到3000美元。按照联合国划分标准，印度属于中低收入国家，可它却自称超级大国。一场短暂且失利的空战，印度居然专门放假庆祝。这让我十分震惊，毕竟印度一向标榜自己是皿煮国家

说印度能和中国平起平坐，简直是笑话！就算中国从现在起停止发展，印度至少还要半个世纪才能追上。看印度过往的发展和基建进度，我对此深表怀疑。

It is futile to compare India with China or any other country. It is irresponsible for India to pass the buck onto other countries for its deficiencies & failures.
Despite 75 years of independence, India is still unable settle its house in order (govt), develop its economy, lift up the majority citizens with the basics of Maslow Pyramid. India requires qualified, virtuous & competent leaders at all levels. This cannot be achieved in a short span of time. This means the present & future of India seems bleak.
Modi, his elaborate-staged foreign trips & his Godi media have been fooling the Indians & the world with exaggerated slogans Vishwaguru, India’s accelerated GDP, India surpassing China at all levels & so on. However, the reality on the ground is a nation which is steeped in chaos, scamming, dishonesty, unprofessionalism & other negatives.
