Even small cuts across millions of people can save billions of dollars, easing pressure on India’s forex reserves and strengthening economic stability during global uncertainty.

Gold is not a safe haven. During WW2 the FDR administration of the US confiscated entire domestic gold. So it’s not a certain hedge. It just depends how bad things get. Problem is taxpayers are very low %.Tax evaders and freebie receivers are the most. Cut down completely all money provided by things like haz subsidy and all. cut down completely madarsas funding. things like these will also save a lot. increase tax collections from the vendors like chai wallahs, and other thella wallahs who are having high number of transactions per day (not the poor ones)

Indians have always been fond of buying luxury and showing off their imported, high brand items while looking down upon domestic produce and you're saying Indians are already Economically patriotic??? Think again. The government is forced to spend on freebies because the Indian population still are sold to vote for any anti national/ incompetent party if that party comes and says "I will you gold, I will give 2000rs per vote, i will give you free ride on govt. There are people who like to show off by buying foreign brands for something that cost 5000 rupee to make will be bought by them for 50000 rupee while there is clear alternative of local /national brand with cost of less than 7000 rupee. So I see PM's request as a valid one. Just my opinion.
