Chinese EVs have landed on Canadian soil. Data from Global Affairs Canada indicates that May was the first month of EV imports from China. It is all part of an agreement made earlier this year.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney signed an initiative with China, which can now export up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles a year into Canada at a reduced tariff rate of 6.1%.

In return, China has agreed to reduce tariffs on some Canadian canola products.

It is all part of a bigger strategy from Canada to move away from total reliance on the U.S. due to recent tariff wars between the two countries.
CGTN's Nina Devries has more from the province of Ontario.

中国电动汽车正式进入加拿大市场。加拿大全球事务部的数据显示，今年5月是加拿大首次从中国进口电动汽车，这一切都源于今年早些时候达成的一项双边协议。

加拿大总理马克·卡尼与中方签署了相关合作方案，根据协议，中国每年最多可向加拿大出口4.9万辆电动汽车，适用6.1%的优惠关税。

作为对等条件，中方同意下调部分加拿大油菜籽产品的进口关税。

此前美加之间爆发多轮关税争端，加拿大出台这项举措，是其摆脱对美国市场完全依赖的宏观战略布局之一。

Hi there, I also spend six months a year in Malaysia. There are loads of Chinese EVs there. From what I can see they are well priced too. I think that they are not subject to the high import tax on foreign cars. Is that correct? Something to do with assembling them in Malaysia not China.

Just the begng if Jaecoo and BYD are the only brands so far.... Actually MG has in my eyes been revitalised.... Theres also the Smart Car but not sure what new product theyve done.... Youve also got Volvo + Polestar..... the native Chinese brands that will accompany BYD in the near future in the UK maybe iaomi and Zeekr and Denza and Nio and these brands are abit more premium

@antwango ami and zeekr are also here in the uk aswell as jaeko, aiaion and Ofcourse byd. MG evs are Lao here which are owned by the Chinese too. Probably spelt them all wrong so apologies.

back in December I was in Canberra (Australia)and I rented a Chinse EV , I was amazed by the car and wished I had the opportunity to buy one back home in Toronto . I also hope the next step will be to let in all types of Chinese cars including PHEVs !

When I visited China a few years ago, I saw, and had a ride in, several Chinese vehicles. Very impressive products. As a Canadian, I would not buy an American vehicle, but I would definitely consider a Chinese made product. Hopefully, they will do well and perhaps be made here in Canada sometime in the future.

Well if the Canadians wants to encourage the Chinese to build some of their factories in Canada then they would need to allow the Chinese to sell more. The 49000 cap will not be enough for any car company to justify investing for a factory. Car manufacturer naturally will look at current and potential sales a factory will bring so they can calculate if they can have a decent ROI on their investments.

I would definitely buy a Chinese car if the infrastructure, service and repair, and aftermarket resources are readily available. I also want to know how they will last in Canadian climate, long winters with salt slush roads.

Chinese EVs are the best on the planet, that is why the US banned them, they can’t compete with China say they ban them.
