How China is already living in an EV future | Foreign Correspondent
In China an electric revolution is taking place. Across the country, electric cars Australians might consider to be luxury items are now standard issue vehicles in China. Massage seats, big screens and even fridges are the minimum requirement for Chinese EV drivers and with charging stations at shop centres that can recharge a battery in under 5 minutes, there’s no such thing as range anxety.
On Foreign Correspondent, reporter Allyson Horn, now based in the ABC’s reopened China bureau, examines how this nation became the dominant global force in electric vehicles. With 75 per cent of the world’s EVs being made in China she gets an inside look at what’s rolling off the production lines in record time and she previews the newest range of EVs including a futuristic flying car that will be on sale by the end of the year. With a global shortage of oil and increased petrol prices in the wake of the US and Israel’s war with Iran, China’s long term EV strategy is leaving the rest of the world behind with surging demand and record-breaking profits.

In the US, subsidies from the Govt. are used for share buybacks and CEO getting their bonuses.

Funny how the tables have turned. Corruption is now infesting the US everywhere, and no longer a China issue.

In America you get rich by passively holding assets like stocks.
In China the government encourages innovation. In America the government encourages anything to keep pum up the stock market

And also to 'lobbying' aka bribery so they could get even more from people taxes...

It's really fascinating that a lot of Australians don't really know anything about China
pauljeffery5691
I think most Australians that are interested in international things will know much about china, the ones that don’t know anything also won’t know anything about 99% of other countries because they live in a bubble

You gotta go there to Grasp the Size of China

Can western media stop reporting on a busy road or intersection. I get it they're trying to show the busy-ness of the city but reporting on a road without closing it down is weird thing they do. Imagine if Chinese media start walking on your road trying to report while blocking you which is completely illegal btw
ricardosy5247
I noticed that too. He is Stephen McDonell in the making. Also an Australian.

I hear that it feels weird to you. But i think at least europeans wouldn't bat an eye in a big city if there's reporter randomly doing strange stuff - i mean maybe some people would be yelling at them but they would be yelling at something else if the reporter wasn't there. What we Berliner are annoyed by is streets being blocked of legally and turned into film sets or by our own construction sites.

When western media still talks about cheap labor for low price products made in China, ABC journalist shows in this video that the factory is full of robots instead of low paid workers.
Is it a big surprise to audiences?
vincentone6260
China spent $230 billions and built a now world leading EV industry. Australia spent more than that and will get a few 2nd-hand subs. It is not the amount of money that matters.
Simulation.C.C
Their government is smart, completely opposite of the idiocracy that is in the US.
joshua5056
And those subs are suppose to protect Australia’s trade routes from the threat of China while China is Australia’s biggest trading partner. You can’t even make this shit up.
JHunt-q6s
I suspect we won’t be getting subs, just their nuclear waste dumped here….the proposed waste site with Canada was cancelled
Adampenklis1
Do you have amnesia we tried to set up an EV initiative with Labor but people got scared it would ruin the weekend. Subs is a seperate issue.
eddyng6067
you are dead right, Australia doesn't need those nuclear submarines , Australia needs ordinary submarines for defending not offensive type of submarines. Australian government should support Holden car industry rather than buying those white elephant nuclear submarines.

Likely neither do most American cities LOL

Hefei looks way cleaner and not polluted at least.

My first trip to China was in 2009. I remember Beiing on a bad day - my first experience of serious air pollution which after New Zealand was a real shock. Now I go back and the change is unbelievable. 17 years in China is like 50 years everywhere else! The cities now feel like our future.
kanchanbandyopadhyay8477
Agree - I still recall being unable to see a metre outside my window due to the pollution and masking up to try and minimise the PPM2.5s.

The reason western media like to walk in the middle of traffic in China is to make a huge scene when the police tell them to get off the road.

Glad ABC is there! I still have family who talk like China is still a backward, polluted dystopia
It's still got its issues but it's progressing unbelievablely fast compared to the US in particular
Simulation.C.C
that is all US propagana they are hearing. China is the only country unfazed by the Iran war oil crisis now. It's actually the US that is backward and don't even have high speed rail.

You can love or hate those cars, but you can't deny the fact that the more you refuse to embrace the trend the further you are being left out.

I am Chinese Australian, very glad ABC reporter watch Chinese EV without any bias.

I move from Australia to China 14 years ago, in those 14 years I've seen massive change, my first trip to Beiing was a month after I arrived here, the air pollution was nasty, now when I go there the place is pollution free, EV's and the government have contributed to Beiing's clean air. I did fall into the trap of trying to educate people about China and explain that the view they have about China is propaganda generated, so I changed my response to the anti-China negativity, by just saying, come and see for yourself, then you can make an educated judgement.

It’s a no brainer, Australia needs to get of the gas and capitalize on our natural resource the sun and use EVs. Instead of importing fossil fuels.

Can't believe an Australian broadcaster has something positive to say about EVs

It's glad to see that Western media is increasingly reporting on China objectively without ideology

I know our media has been shutting our eyes to China for the past two decades, if you just live their for a couple of months, you’ll realise many cities in China have “silent” roads since most of the vehicles are EVs…that’s China’s big achievement on their mega infrastructure builds all over the country and pushing the clean and green tech to be used in their daily life.

Anyone with a passing familiarity with the history of government policies in the West knows that all Western countries, at one point or another, have subsidized or bailed out particular industries... even outright nationalizing some. Your views on the politics and economics of such policies aside, I don’t get this pearl-clutching over China doing the same thing that we did. I think what frustrates the Western elite is that China’s political system gives it a huge advantage, with the ability to mobilize the economy, steer it in specific directions, and experiment with bold, nimble policies that we simply can’t match because our political structure doesn’t work that way. I’m not saying that’s inherently good or bad—there are trade-offs either way—but when pundits talk about catching up with China, there’s often a hint of jealousy, knowing they can’t actually make it happen because the political system is too sluggish and held back by rent seekers.

While e-bikes and e-scooters have quality problems leading to fires, the EVs don't.
Traditional ICE vehicles are 20 to 80 times more likely to burn or explode than EVs. That said, if a lithium EV burns, there's problems with toxc fumes, but that's mostly solved with the new sodium EV batteries.

Australian Government chose America over China. Just look at what America is currently doing compared to China.
I think they made the wrong choice.
