America Is Blocking Chinese EVs ... I Flew to China to Find Out Why

Everyone online keeps saying Chinese EVs are cheap knockoffs that could never compete with Tesla, Mercedes, BMW, or the rest of the world. So I flew 9,000 miles to China to see for myself.

From self-driving cars and massive EV factories to battery technology and infrastructure that honestly shocked me, this trip completely changed the way I look at the future of electric cars. I thought I knew what to expect… I was wrong.

We got a behind the scenes look at CATL and the battery tech powering the future of electric cars. EV batteries are changing fast, and CATL is a huge part of why.

I'm not convinced China have caught up, I think China have left us all in the dust.

The lack of city noise is the most amazing thing.

kimblakely4559
Green license plates EV’s and plug-in EV’s
Blue license plates petro vehicles.
I was there for 9 days, 7 in Guangzhou, 2 in Shenzhen. Both cities no street noise.
Went to west Kowloon in Hong Kong, very noisy.

back in my days in the UK we had to modify the trunk with loud speakers

All that traffic and zero honking…. Crazy

"This is the most complicated driving there is." India: "Hold my beer."

astargaming8301
Bro should come India, he would surely be amazed the way people drive here, and he won't be able to drive here

chukwunonsoegbunike4671
come to Nigeria and rive in Lagos or Onitsha. if the traffic doesn't get u, the potholes will get you

Nio alone has 3,750+ swap stations in China. You didn't see half of the story

jaker3151
If you can't beat them, tariff them.

llenliu8820
Nah, at this point, it aint a tariff, but a full on embargo. Politicians dont want chinese tech for national security concerns, so they arent allowing chinese companies to start building their cars here and you have the massive ass tariff. So if the logic is high tariff forced companies to move to the US, but then politicians say nah anyways. Imo, it’s effectively just an embargo in only but name. The worst part the tariff doesn’t work anyways bc byd just doesn’t import to the US bc it’s too dam high.

I was gonna make a comment about the only risk being surveillance and data collection being a huge risk with Chinese EVs, but then I remembered that basically all new cars do that

gazjonze
Just off to the DMV to get my licence so the car can drive itself.

Five years ago I would NEVER think about buying a Chinese vehicle. But the other car manufacturers have sabotaged their cars with shit components

peglor
Tyre noise drowns out the engines (Except for the morons with 'race' exhausts) once a car is hits 50 or 60 km/h, so the engine makes no difference except in places where speed limits are kept low. Cities are quiet, cars are noisy.

villear
And we denied all that why? To protect the trash, overpriced car market here in the US so they can keep rip us off

razorlens
That and the fact that our families still have jobs. If Chinese market takes over, the factories where our families work will be shut down. The repair shows will no longer be needed. In 20-30 it will get rid of most blue collar jobs. I am all for technology and advancement but I also want food on the table.

drancealot
@razorlens If you think saving US jobs is why the US isn't allowing Chinese cars and EVs into their market, you're still under the delusion that the US government and corporate America cares about the working class. The government cares about their donors and the corporations care about their shareholders. If they can avoid paying workers they would do it. They don't want Chinese cars in the US because it would take away from their profit. You can say what you want about China. Political oppression, sweat shops, surveillance state, etc. What you can't say is that China takes the money it has amassed over the last half century as a global manufacturer and reinvested it into infrastructure and technology, lifting it's people out of poverty. The US is the richest country on the planet, and people are dying of homelessness, poverty, and preventable diseases. Imagine if the US actually cared about it's people instead of pitting them against each other so billionaires get wealthier. If the US cared to make life affordable for the working class, it would have to worry about the Chinese market taking over. More precisely, if the US cared about it's working class and infrastructure, the Chinese market wouldn't be able to take over.

I was in Shanghai for a while and it always blows my mind every time I go on the road, the amount of vehicles yet so quiet was so trippy. It used to be so close to gridlock and roll your window down and u actually hear birds chir in the distance lol

chrislocke3362
China hasn't just "caught up", they have surpassed American engineering.

plaintextlog
In Australia, Chinese EV's are hugely popular. Like every 5th car. The US is missing out.

D1ARBO
China hasn't caught up to the US, they're 10 years ahead!

EveryBeard.Has.AStory
A lot more than 10 years I'm afraid.

CrushDani
Meanwhile, the US is like...WE NEED COAL AGAIN!!!

halesofmiletus2966
Who said Chinese EV’s are crap? People in the US? The ones who have never left the USA?

philipdavison3862
They do not want Chinese cars in America,it will kill American car sales.

AntonioSerranoMx91
The ones who have never left the states. Yup.

kalikaputra
actually here in Australia we know they are crap, it was all a mad rush last 3-5 years, but since people bought them and start to use them, their sales dropped 41% this first quarter alone and we have ,like China, fields of unsold Chinese EVs just being parked but they have been registered as sold. Happening in Brazli, Europe, Israel, south Africa, Thailand too. This whole EV thing already blown up in China too. p.s that PEng car they were driving is in a world of hurt for these cars causing accidents.

rogergaudette9511
They haven't caught up, they surpassed.

tony_25or6to4
That's it even crazy. You should have seen Guangzhou 20-30 years ago. And 15 years ago, you couldn't see a 300 feet and you eyes and lungs would burn because if the smog.

rossr6616
yeah, was there 40 years ago, very few private cars, just some minivans used as taxs, cadre in PLA green Mercedes; still low rise old city buildings, walked everywhere, three guys in Mao suits following me everywhere
New roads being built had guys with picks creating the gravel for roadbed from large stones!
AMAZING what happened in only 40 years, lots of very hard work by Chinese people.

unsearchablethings8167
I landed in Beiing and had a layover. The whole place was like a forest fire and even inside the airport it smelled like it was on fire. You literally couldn't see more than a few hundred feet. That was about 10 years ago.

fredpinczuk7352
Those days are gone. Shanghai is getting better and better as well.

mybinationallife9707
It’s like driving in Managua, Nicaragua minus the surprise potholes.

MrBuitron
China is living in 2046 with those stop lights

itechiwizard83
Even scooter Riders get the count down on their bikes if they are modern scooters, otherwise of course all Chinese map apps are integrated with the infrastructure so you can see it on the maps too.

Fabulousprofound168
I was in Shezhen back in 1999 and even then they had stoplight counters… but of course it was the 90’s so they didn’t have sat navigation to help time your approach like this one can. And my ride back then was a clapped out Volkswagen Quantum taxcab which couldn’t be any more further from this Xpeng

diegoweisselrovira
No America is blocking chinese EV's, but a country called USA. America is welcoming chinese with open arms!

octorkew7913
If our stop lights had count-downs like China and Vietnam, drag racing would be the fastest growing sport in America... (BTW: Lanes are suggestions...)

I visited Guangzhou in the 80's. They had literally just opened their country up to tourism. Two things that seem to have happened to you, happened to me, too! Firstly, next to no-one there had seen a white guy, let alone a 6'3" white guy with super curly hair. Everywhere we went, people were staring at us. Even in the tax, people would bend down to look inside the tax when we were stopped at a light.
Secondly, speaking of taxs, we had one tax driver for nearly 6 hours, and were charged about the equivalent of $15 today.
I really liked the city!! From your video clearly so much has changed. Yet some things don't seem to have, either!

This is what happens when your government invests in the economy rather than war.

khaotickid
There's a reason US automakers are lobbying for the government to ban these

Here in Brazil, there used to be a lot of myths and skepticism around Chinese cars. But now we have several brands here, like BYD, GWM, Geely, and Ora, and they’re quickly taking over local sales, pushing down traditional brands like Fiat, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Renault, and Citroen.
It’s also becoming more and more common to see EVs in cities — even in small towns. Chinese cars usually offer way more features for the same price as these “traditional” competitors, many of which feel like they’ve barely evolved over the years.
