BYD Just Became Toyota's EV Battery Supplier (Japan Is In Shock)
Toyota just did something it has never done in nearly 90 years. The biggest automaker on Earth, the company that taught the entire world how to build cars, is now putting its fiercest rival's batteries inside Toyota-badged electric cars. And it's not some no-name supplier — it's BYD, the Chinese giant that Japanese executives once dismissed as a copycat. Right now, brand new Toyotas are rolling off production lines with a BYD heartbeat inside them. When you hear what one of these BYD-powered Toyotas actually costs, you'll understand why Japan's auto industry is treating this like a five-alarm fire.
To understand how the master ended up buying from the student, you have to go back to a tiny battery workshop in Shenzhen, because nobody saw this company coming. In 1995, a 29-year-old chemist named Wang Chuanfu quit his research job and started BYD in Shenzhen with 20 employees and money borrowed from his cousin. The name stood for "Build Your Dreams," and people laughed at that, too. But Wang understood one thing better than almost anyone alive: batteries. Within a few years, BYD was churning out rechargeable batteries for the world's biggest phone brands.
Then in 2003, Wang did something investors hated. He bought a struggling Chinese carmaker. The stock tanked, and analysts called it suicide. His logic was brutally simple: the car of the future is a battery on wheels, and nobody makes batteries cheaper than BYD. Warren Buffett got the memo before Detroit and Tokyo did. In 2008, Berkshire Hathaway paid $232 million for roughly 10% of the company, and Charlie Munger compared Wang to Thomas Edison.
Then came the move that changed everything. In 2020, BYD unveiled the Blade Battery, and by 2022, it had killed off pure gasoline cars entirely — the first major automaker on the planet to go all-in on electric, with no hedging and no half measures. While the old guard debated whether electric vehicles were even ready, BYD quietly became a giant, producing 4 million cars a year.

China don't fear level field competitions like US. Chinese even supply its EV batteries to their rivals. What a shame to the Japanese.

I don't think it is a shame for Toyota or Japan. It shows maturity and humbleness to accept someone do something better and willing to work together. That is what set Toyota apart from the rest of legacy automakers.
Reachland02
There's nothing shameful about that. Throughout East Asian history, many successful warlords won over their rivals' best champions and warriors, even those who had once fought against them or wanted them dead. Those warriors later became loyal supporters and helped secure their victories. In the same way, Toyota adopting BYD's battery strategies is a smart and practical business move.

@Reachland02 Depends which dynasty you base your assertions. Han was the most humiliating in entire Chinese history when it came to extermination of those defected helpful generals. Not even letting know and straight executions. Lisimin one also brutal literally exterminate helpful generals without a path forward while destroying own brother who were just as capable. Then the infamous wusankui of late Ming and early Qing.
Reachland02
@renwei78 You're right that many dynasties eliminated capable generals after victory. My point wasn't that all rulers embraced talented rivals. My point is that there's nothing shameful about adopting useful ideas, technologies, or people from competitors. Toyota using BYD batteries is a business decision, not a national humiliation.
As for Chinese history, I'm not really interested in debating which dynasty treated its generals better or worse. You probably understand the point I was making: learning from a rival's strengths is often a sign of pragmatism, not weakness.

you know why china subsidize the ev at first ?
because the ev battery at that time too expensive.
now 2 giant can mass produce and bring down the cost - catl & byd

I am a BYD stockholder, it's on track to spend almost 10 billion dollars in R&D this year and almost expensing them all on the income statement. Its not just a car company, its becoming a giant hardware tech conglomerate. And their R&D spending has been right on the money, people shouldn't be surprised as its likely to enter more technology licensing agreement in other part of the world just like Toyota has been with others

BYD approached Toyota a few years ago to do a partnership. Toyota CEO flatly rejected BYD and virtually shown a look down on BYD, thinking Toyota is forever invincible and untouchable. Not by Chinese anyway.
How humble Toyota is now in China. Chinese saying " Refuse to drink on invitation but accept to drink on penalty"

This should not be a surprise since BYD has been supplying batteries for Toyota's EVs in China and those they are exporting to South East Asia, re: BZ line.

BYD would not be able to copy from anyone because they are way ahead of everyone in EV technology. They are five to tens years ahead of the US, and half that ahead of Japan, Korea, and Germany. Every attempt by the West to start something has failed hopelessly.

Correction, US is not 10 years behind, probably at least 20 years. The supremo in tech doesn't even know where to start in the supply chain. But damn good at slogans and high fences small yards alliances.

... but we have this dumb down culture as long as you made something with a square and four wheels you are copying. Tesla with 0 patent bought Toyota factory and all its Manufacturing techniques now they try to say Chinese copies

the problem with japanese and european companies is that these companies comes with lots old baggages while chinese companies doesn't have these roadblocks which is why they are running away with new technologies from cars to battery as they can create whatever they want to try

the irony is, if you went to China 20 years ago, it felt like you had just time traveled back. but now, they're so far ahead.

I think it's more a case of still refusing to dive face-first into the farce of EVs, so just buying the cheapest out there, rather than investing in a market already proven to be broken and only held up by government subsidies and mandates. The real market REJECTS EVs and doesn't want them. If you doubt that, try selling a 2nd hand EV? Don't even bother trying to sell a 3rd or 4th hand EV. It's a fire risk, you have to pay someone to take it away

Blade battery is a brilliant case of form following function. It undoubtedly points the way to the optimal battery configuration for EV traction batteries.
The analogue is aviation, in the early days passenger planes took on all sorts of shapes, by the 1990s they all looked pretty much the same.

Probably Toyota will copy & steal this BYD battery technology.

This isn't just about Toyota buying batteries. It's about Japan losing control of the most important part of the future car.

Toyota lobbied the Japanese government not to favour electric vehicles as it would cause huge problems for the Japanese labour market. Also at one time Toyota owned 10% of Tesla which is now valued as much as the entire market value of Toyota. They sold out!
What a disgrace for the company that brought us the Prius! Legacy auto is in real trouble.
