US treasury secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday defended President Donald Trump’s decision to immediately resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time in 33 years, saying it was crucial to help America "certainly catch up" with China.

"The US is lagging China in nuclear power development, but we can certainly catch up," Bessent said during an interview on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria. "It’s all hands on deck for nuclear power," he added.

Bessent’s remarks came hours after Trump ordered the Pentagon to immediately restart nuclear weapons testing, ending a moratorium that had been in place since 1992.

美国财政部长斯科特·贝森特于周四为唐纳德·特朗普总统的决定进行辩护，该决定要求立即重启中断33年的核武器试验。他表示，这对帮助美国“赶超”中国至关重要。

The announcement was made minutes before Trump met Chinese President in Busan, South Korea, and was widely seen as a show of strength ahead of high-stakes trade talks between Washington and Beiing

Bessent also pointed to what he described as a major trade win "Trump got China to buy 12 million metric tons of soybeans this season," he said.

"Between now and January, the total will rise — and then for the next three years, they’re going to be buying a minimum of 25 million metric tons per annum," he added.

China, Russia react sharply

Russia’s state-run RIA news agency quoted a senior lawmaker as saying Trump’s decision would usher in "a new era of unpredictability and open confrontation."

Beiing’s foreign ministry called on Washington to "honor its commitments" under international treaties, referring to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), signed by the US but never ratified.

@Chad_Max All know that if the bombs drop, we're all dead. Everyone knows that since the 80s and the US are already doing tests - just not with active warheads cause they don't actually need to. The US alone could bomb the world to an ice age killing like 98% of all living organisms. This is Trump wanting a big boom, to make him feel like a big boy. It actually prob will make more countries start up their tests in the open, which will help them catch up to the US capabilities faster, so its so dumb and unaccessary on so many levels

Complex nuclear weapons program testing takes months, if not years, to document what is expected during the performance of the physical testing. Trump ordered the test be started immediately like a toddler wanting a toy not knowing the cost and time obtaining the toy.

This is bad on so mny levels. But the biggest question should be. Where is he wanting to test these Weapons at. For most Americans will not want them tested in their backyards I do not think. At least not this American. Also, China and Russia as well as most of the Nuclear Powers have not tested Nukes in a long time and there is a reason. That reason is radiation.
