NEW DELHI: India and Japan on Friday signed an implementing arrangement for a joint lunar exploration mission to the south pole of the Moon called Chandrayaan-5, during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Tokyo.

The arrangement between Isro and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa) concerning the joint lunar polar exploration mission (LUPEX) was inked on the sidelines of Modi's visit and the pact was exchanged by Jaxa vice-president Matsuura Mayumi and India’s ambassador to Japan Sibi George.

Addressing a joint press briefing with his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi said, “We welcome the collaboration between Isro and Jaxa for the Chandrayaan-5 mission. Our active participation has gone beyond the limits of the Earth and will become a symbol of mankind’s progress in space.”

Referring to the global praise received by Chandrayaan-3's successful landing near the lunar South Pole in 2023 — when India became the first country to go to the uncharted territory of the Moon — Modi said the next challenge lies in deeper exploration of the lunar surface, particularly areas that may hold critical resources such as water ice.

“This will contribute to deepening our understanding of the permanently shadowed regions at the lunar south pole,” Modi said in an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun.

这份由印度空间研究组织（ISRO）与日本宇宙航空研究开发机构（JAXA）共同签署的 “月球极地联合探测任务（LUPEX）” 协议，是在莫迪访日期间的相关活动中达成的。日本宇宙航空研究开发机构副总裁松浦真由美与印度驻日本大使西比・乔治共同交换了协议文本。

在与日本首相石破茂共同举行的新闻发布会上，莫迪总理表示：“我们对印度空间研究组织与日本宇宙航空研究开发机构在‘月船 5 号’任务上的合作表示欢迎。我们的积极合作已超越地球界限，将成为人类太空探索进程中的一座象征。”

2023 年，印度 “月船3号”在月球南极附近成功着陆，使印度成为首个抵达月球这一未知区域的国家，该成就获得了全球赞誉。莫迪在提及此事时指出，下一阶段的挑战在于对月球表面进行更深入的探测，尤其是那些可能蕴藏水冰等关键资源的区域。

莫迪在接受《读卖新闻》采访时表示：“这将有助于加深我们对月球南极永久阴影区的了解。”

1.chandrayan 3 had not landed on moon s south pole but at a distance of 700 km from south pole of moon . It is the truth. 2 There is the exstence of water in moon but cannot be pumped easily because of gravity factor/drilling problem

It is basically asking for Japanese investments in factories staffed with cheap Indian labor. India is the cheap labor supplier to the entire world. The profits will accrue mostly to the Japanese companies, though Indian workers will get paid nicely too.
