The White House has called Pune, Gujarat and Chennai “ugly sister cities” in a new report targeting China's alleged trans-shipment of goods through third countries to avoid US tariffs.

But there is a crucial distinction: the report does not accuse these Indian cities or a named Indian company of tariff evasion. Instead, it uses the manufacturing hubs to illustrate competition in products such as pumps and compressors. Hem Kaur Saroya tells you more on Vantage on Firstpost.

As an Indian, compare to cities in china, Indian cities have no walkable space, no parks, roads have potholes, not enough or no public toilet, no garbage disposal stations, you can see corrupt inefficient engineering in Indian public infrastructure everywhere..

I am a patriotic Indian, while US or anyone does not have the platform to call our cities ugly, we should still look within and make efforts to keep our cities clean and beautiful. 印度城市就像垃圾场，人行横道乱设，很多路口连红绿灯都没有。

A major reason many people around the world perceive Indian cities poorly is the condition of our public spaces. Too many places are littered, poorly maintained and treated almost like dum grounds. We can build world class airports, metros and highways, but unless we develop basic civic sense and learn to keep our streets and public spaces clean, that perception will not change. Just look at Singapore. In the 1960s, parts of it struggled with slums, littering, poor sanitation and severe pollution. What we see today did not happen magically. It took decades of strict enforcement, proper infrastructure, sustained public campaigns and, most importantly, a change in civic behaviour. India can absolutely transform too, but cleanliness has to become the responsibility of citizens as much as the government. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind

全球很多人对印度城市印象不好，核心原因是公共区域环境太差。大量区域垃圾遍地、维护缺失，几乎当成垃圾场。我们能建起世界级机场、地铁和高速，但如果民众没有基础公共意识、不维护街道和公共区域，外界印象不会改观。可以看看新加坡：上世纪60年代，新加坡部分区域同样充斥贫民窟、垃圾、卫生短板和严重污染。如今的面貌不是凭空变出来的，靠的是数十年严格执法、完善基建、持续宣传，最重要的是民众习惯的转变。印度完全可以转型，但环境卫生，既要政府出力，也需要每个公民自觉。独立日快乐！印度万岁！
