Thirty-five years ago, China’s People’s Liberation Army relied on massive troop numbers and outdated military hardware. Though it had large stockpiles of tanks, fighter jets and long-range missiles, most equipment stemmed from mid-20th-century designs with poor accuracy, slow deployment and obsolete core technology. The military prioritized quantity over quality, lacking modern combat systems and advanced operational capabilities.

The 1991 Gulf War served as a critical wake-up call for China. Witnessing Iraq’s large, outdated military be rapidly defeated by U.S.-led high-tech forces exposed stark similarities to its own outdated defense structure. This pushed China to launch comprehensive military reforms, including revised combat doctrines, joint operation strategies and systematic upgrades to match modern, technology-driven warfare.

China builds a ton of prototypes of their gear. It's hard to keep track of, but one good rule of thumb is that when they find a good design they will make over 100 of them, and then do a Type 100A style evolution of the design.
Their Type 052 frigate is a good example of that, where they go from A, B, C all the way to Type 052D when they feel they have a winner. The Type 055 destroyer is a bit of a departure, because its big and expensive, but it's not an optimized platform. It's bigger than it has to be and it has 10 engines - so it's filling more of a general role. It's big and scary, so its hard to bully. There is room to become a flagship. But most of all, it has so much extra power, it can adapt to what comes next.

The economical damage China could do would far outweigh any benefits of a local conflict too, so no one is going to try either. That's the problem when you let one country make all of the worlds shit.

I mean their 055 are better than anything the US navy has AND THEY HAVE 10. because the zumwalt will never be deployed, they only have 2 plus parts ship. And only 1 flight 3 Burke in service. Chinese 052D are all state of the art, with 62 VLS cells that are bigger than the US navy ones.
They do lack in aircraft carriers though, but Chinese submarines will make quick work of those, and the US has a huge gap in anti submarine warfare after they lost the constellation frigate.
The US navy will be very weak by 2035, relying on outdated aircraft technology such as the hornets, while China deploys their j-35s that will have no problem taking out a fleet of hornets before they get close
