China will ban flush, electronic door handles on all electric vehicles sold in the country starting January next year. Regulators say the design can fail after crashes or power loss, trap passengers inside vehicles. Several fatal accidents in China have been linked to doors that could not be opened. The new rules require visible, mechanical door handles that work without electricity. Flush handles were popularised by Tesla and are used in around 60 percent of China’s top-selling EVs. US and European regulators are also reviewing similar safety concerns, raising global implications for carmakers.

从明年 1 月起，中国将禁止在境内销售的所有电动汽车使用平贴式电子车门把手。监管部门表示，该设计在车辆发生碰撞或断电后可能失效，导致乘客被困车内。国内已发生多起因车门无法打开造成的致命事故。新规要求配备无需电力即可工作的外露式机械车门把手。

平贴式车门把手由特斯拉普及，目前在中国销量靠前的电动汽车中，约六成采用了这一设计。美国与欧洲监管机构也在评估同类安全隐患，这一举措将对全球车企产生影响。

MAYBE... It would be prudent to first try to use a mechanism first.

EXAMPLE: You have your key. The key opens the door without touching the car as your approach and a button or distance to close by itself upon leaving. Both ways.

THE DOOR HANDLE: This mechanism does not have to be connected to ANY ELECTRIC DEVICE of the car. It could be as an extra.

MEANING: MANUAL.. You can manually push the door handles to hide them and push a manual button on the side of the car, near the handle, that pushes out the handle manually without any electrics nor battery association with the car.

That way you have both options without the need to have handles sticking out of the car.

SEPERARTE THE RESPONSIBLITIES OF THE VEHICLE. FROM ELECTRIC TO MANUAL.

Of course other features can be added to extract the handle but the handle does not need to be seen always.

或许更稳妥的做法是先保留一套机械结构。

举个例子：你带着钥匙，靠近车辆不用碰车就能解锁，离开时按按钮或靠距离感应自动落锁，两种方式都能用。

车门把手：这套机械结构可以不和车上任何电器相连，只作为备用方案。

也就是说，纯手动：你可以手动把把手按进去隐藏，也可以按车门侧面把手旁的机械按钮，不用电、不依赖电瓶就能把把手弹出来。

这样两种方式都有，还不用让把手一直凸在外面。

把车辆功能分开：电动归电动，手动归手动。

当然也可以加其他弹出把手的功能，但把手不用一直露在外面。

Most of us here on the comfortable side of the world are on board with this change. Title is wrong though. "Hidden" car handles are fine if they give them a mechanical linkage. It is the electronic part that is dumb. Touch screens hopefully come under fire next. My fix would be full large touch screens are fine, but you have to configure them and set them up stationary and in park. When driving the screen remains fixed. So make a 'nav' section, put your radio stations on the bottom, ac in one corner, whatever you like, but once you are driving it stays like that. I rent a lot of cars and am shocked at how bad the touchscreen UI's are for driving. They suck you into多级菜单 like its windows, and pretty soon you are focused on the screen instead of the road. Having to navigate through multiple menus just to switch a radio station is ridiculous.

I bet you the hidden handle idea was from marketing and designers. All the engineers opposed it but was overruled by upper management. I can hear all the "I told you so"s from the engineers. This happens all the time. Engineers always get ignored.

I can't believe that it took so many deaths to realise this obvious problem with battery operated handle. Your door needs to work without a battery.

Debasish, 100% right! Doors should function both manually and automatically. Making it just Auto means grave risk during Emergency as the Auto system may fail. That's basic common sense!

If it were logical, it would be about them being electric with no mechanical way to use them . So if I gave an electronic handle in the shape of a standard one, that would be ok?

The electronic door handles are necessary on a Tesla because the door seals wrap around the top of the glass. If you use the manual handle too often, it will rip the door seal off or break the glass. The electronic release pulls the glass down slightly before it releases the door. Tesla's do actually have mechanical door handles inside for emergencies. They are located exactly where you would think to place them in the front on the door armrest. The rear ones are hidden in the door储物格.
