US-China trade ties: Trump says talks with chinese leader ended with ‘great success’ — But will it revive their economies

During their latest meeting in South Korea, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President managed to cool the intense trade stand-off between their countries briefly.

The two leaders reached a provisional deal: the US would trim tariffs on Chinese goods by 10%, bringing the rate down to 47%, while China would pause its export curbs on rare earth minerals and increase purchases of American soybeans.

Trump hailed the talks as “a great success,” adding that he will visit China in April next year.

However, even after the temporary truce, the bigger question still looms.

在韩国举行的最新会晤中，美国总统唐纳德·特朗普与中国领导人暂时缓和了两国间紧张的贸易对峙。

两国领导人达成了一项临时协议：美国对中国商品的关税下调10%，税率降至47%；中国则暂停对稀土矿物的出口限制，并增加美国大豆的采购量。

特朗普称赞此次会谈“大获成功”，并补充称他将于明年4月访华。

然而，即便达成了这项临时休战协议，更关键的问题仍悬而未决。

Though China no longer faces a threat of Trump's 100% tariffs and US gets to sell its soybeans, there is a bigger picture.

Among the hardest hit by the tariff tussle are American soybean farmers. The commodity, the country’s largest agricultural export, has been effectively shut out of China since May, when higher tariffs triggered an embargo.

Until this week, China had not placed a single new order.

The timing of this breakthrough may be too late for many growers.

尽管中国不再面临特朗普此前威胁的100%关税，美国也得以卖出大豆，但背后还有更宏观的考量。

US treasury secretary Scott Bessent criticised China’s decision to tighten control of rare earth exports, calling it a “mistake” that cautioned everyone.

Reflecting on China’s decision to introduce new export restrictions in October, Bessent said the move had revealed Beiing’s willingness to weaponise rare earths, a group of minerals that are vital to defence systems, electric vehicles, consumer electronics and several other industries.

美国财政部长斯科特·贝森特批评中国收紧稀土出口管控的决定，称这是一个“错误”，给所有人敲响了警钟。

China does not have any moral obligations to supply Trumpistan's need for rare earth minerals. There is no problem for Trumpistan to mine its minerals, process them and produce high purity needed elements. Mining and processing these minerals will force people of Trumpistan to shift away from sedentary lifestyle to work with sweat, and damage its environment in this goal. Does Trumpistan want this?
