Canada says China is a strategic partner, amid trade war with US: 'Any relationship has challenges'

Canada foreign minister Anita Anand said Canada now sees Beiing as a strategic partner in a dangerous world, in a major shift in the power equation as Canada's relationship with the US worsens. US President Donald Trump canceled trade talks with Canada, taking offence at a Canadian advertisement that claimed Ronald Reagan was against tariffs. Trump called the advertisement fake while Canada decided to withdraw the ad. But before this development, Anand issued her statement shifting Canada's stand on China and said all relationships have challenges.

Anand told The Canadian Press on Monday that a strategic partnership with China means going beyond allowing individual irritants to strain the entire relationship and permitting Canada to advance its economic and security interests.

“It’s necessary for us to lay the foundation, if we are going to find areas where we can further co-operate,” she said.

“There are going to always be challenges in any relationship. The key is to be able to have the dialogue necessary to address the issues of Canadian concern.”

加拿大外长安妮塔·阿南德表示，在加美关系持续恶化、大国力量格局发生重大转变的当下，在这个充满风险的世界里，加拿大如今把中国视为战略伙伴。美国总统唐纳德·特朗普取消了与加拿大的贸易谈判，原因是一则加拿大广告称罗纳德·里根曾反对关税，这让他感到不满。特朗普称该广告内容不实，加拿大则决定撤回这则广告。但在此事发生前，阿南德已发表声明，调整加拿大对中国的立场，并表示所有关系都存在挑战。

周一，阿南德在接受《加拿大通讯社》采访时表示，与中国建立战略伙伴关系，意味着不能让个别摩擦问题影响整体关系，同时要让加拿大得以推进自身经济与安全利益。

“若想找到更多可合作的领域，我们就必须为此奠定基础。”她说道。

Canada called China a disruptive power in 2022

Three years ago, Canada called China an increasingly disruptive global power that holds "interests and values that increasingly depart from ours (Canada's)".

“We must be nuanced in our diplomacy. We must stress our concerns relating to security and public safety on the one hand, and we must seek to build additional supply chains on the other. That is pragmatism,” Anita Anand said after she visited senior officials in China, India and Singapore. “What we are aiming to do is to recalibrate the relationship, so that it is constructive and pragmatic,” Anand said.

“We are going to be seeking to ensure that foreign policy serves the domestic economy,” Anand said. “Let’s not make any mistake that China is a major global economic player.”

2022年加拿大曾称中国为“破坏性力量”

三年前，加拿大称中国是“日益具有破坏性的全球力量”，且“其利益与价值观与加拿大的分歧正不断扩大”。

There are too many illegal immigrants, truck drivers, people causing traffic jams and destructions to local properties as Khalistanis or Hindutva supporters, fraudulent users or social safety net, and fraudulent businesses hiring all of the above. Despite being born in India, I am sure Chinese influence on Canada will be much better for Canada's business and growth compared with the Indian influence that has nearly destroyed local culture and ethics.

In my state we have been dealing with canadians for a long time also. Raising our home values by buying up homes and spending all that trade deficit money that would otherwise be in america if it wasn't going to you guys. That has helped to raise home prices to such a high level that poor people have no shot at buying a home where I live. This break up is needed. Wish you luck canada, but we have grown apart.

We must move between 25 and 66% of our manufacturing needs back to our shores to ensure that such shortages do not impact us so severely again. This also applies to rare earth elements. Canada should also do this as should every country. I encourage people to look at the history of asymmetrical trade barriers and tariffs against the U.S. by other countries. as a canadian, i honestly didn’t even know we were still trying to negotiate. the majority of us have long since switched our buying habits and found canadian-made alternatives for products we previously got from the US. grocery stores have set up “canadian-made” aisles, farmers and businesses are thriving, and there’s a feeling of canadian patriotism that wasn’t there before. we spent so long relying on the US for everything that we didn’t even realize how capable we are by ourselves. as much as the recent fractures in our relationship with the US sucks, it’s helped us become a stronger country

First of all, it wasn't the Canadian government that placed the ad, it was the provincial government of Ontario, which has been targeted by Trump. He wasn't joking about using economic force to make Canada the 51st state. The North American Union both economically and geopolitically is being destroyed and you worry about an ad.

Wow. Shermichael is a moron. Trump himself tried to influence Canadian elections by calling our prime minister “governor” and worse, declaring us the 51st state. His idiotic tariffs are highly damaging to Canadians and he lies to the American public to garner support for his policies. You can’t look at all these actions in isolation and conveniently ignore all the shit stirred up by Trump. As a Canadian, I believe deeply that Americans and every voter in a de ocratic country deserves to be told the truth by their political leaders so they can vote on the facts of a matter, not on bullshit. Trump does not belong in office and the damage he is doing to America and it’s allies will last generations.

As a Canadian, I thought I’d add my two cents. Just to clarify, Canada is looking to make other partnerships in the world and in fact has done a good job of that so far. Work in progress. The reason that they lifted retaliatory tariffs in Canada and they’re not adding tariffs is because the Prime Minister doesn’t want to hurt his own people. After all tariffs are tax on your citizens
