The United States has launched a $1 billion initiative to stockpile rare earths and other critical minerals, with reserves managed by the Pentagon and accessible only under presidential or top defence orders. India is also moving in this direction, planning its own National Critical Mineral Reserve while ram up production of rare earth magnets. This global rush is being driven by rising dependence on China, which refines nearly all of the world’s rare earths. Recent Chinese export restrictions on key materials like gallium, germanium, and magnet technologies have deepened supply concerns. At the same time, military demand for these minerals is rising, and market volatility threatens industrial stability.
