After Germany Refused to Supply Engines, Thailand Purchases Three Chinese Submarines for $1 Billion

Eight years ago, the Thai government approved the purchase of S26T submarines from China for the Thai navy. A year later, the two sides reached a preliminary agreement for the purchase of three submarines for a total of $1 billion.

Due to Thailand's precarious financial situation, the two sides agreed to an installment payment method, with China delivering the submarines in batches, one at a time.

However, the project has not been smooth sailing. The German government officially refused to export the engines required for the submarines to China, bringing the $1 billion submarine project to a sudden halt.

Many German military experts believe that if China fails to deliver as promised, it will lose its credibility as a partner.

But now, to keep the project moving forward, the Thai government officially approved a key revision to the procurement contract two weeks ago, replacing the originally planned German MTU396 engines with Chinese CHD620 engines.

八年前，泰国政府批准为本国海军从中国采购S26T型潜艇。一年后，双方就采购三艘潜艇达成初步协议，总金额达10亿美元。
