The ongoing dispute surrounding Nvidia’s H20 AI chip sales to China has now intensified discussions about US-China technology arms race. A recent online report revealed that China is pursuing its major tech companies like Alibaba and ByteDance to reconsider their orders for Nvidia’s H20 AI chips even as Chinese regulators have asked tech firms to explain why they are purchasing Nvidia’s chips – which US President Donald Trump called ‘obsolete’ – instead of using domestic alternatives, suggesting that they want the Chinese tech companies to downsize their orders of H20 chips.

Following this ongoing controversy, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has issued a blunt warning about America’s vulnerability in the global tech arms race. As reported by Financial Review, speaking at the Reagan National Economic Forum, Dimon called it “a little embarrassing” that the U.S. allowed 100% of its penicillin supply and critical tech components to come from China. “It’s a little embarrassing that we as a nation allowed 100% of our penicillin to come from China, and all of our rare earths, and all of our advanced chipmaking tools,” Dimon said. “We need to get our act together.”

On being asked about the technology arms race between US and China, Jamie Dimon mentioned that it was an important miliarty issue as US cannot allow the sale of a chip to China which is designed to make powerful AI systems.

Talking about the ongoing chip dispute, Dimon added that “You don’t want to give them the chips which will make their supersonic missiles better.”Dimon also emphasised that America cannot stop China but can definitely slow them down. “we should be specific about the things that protect us, and technology is a big piece of that,” said Dimon.

Idiot Trump called the H20 "obsolete". This is imprudent on many counts. Starting with basics you should not show your product which you have decided to sell to somebody in poor light. Strategically he should have installed backdoor access in those chips and then actively pursuing the Chinese to buy those H20 or at least remained poker faced. This would have given him many advantages - millions of dollars in revenue while positioning US as the hegemon of technology, bargaining power from a positon of advantage etc. This wide mouth moron is destroying USA. And pitiable Americans are helplessly watching unraveling of their empire so quickly.

As soon as US loses it's edge over technologies, it's economy would crumble. The technology and weapons export are the engines powering their economy... if these edges are lost and if dollar loses the reserve currency status, how will they sustain the economy?

I still remember JP Morgan Healthcare Conference 2016 in which the same person commented about how great China is as a country and how India is not trustworthy due to corruption and nepotism. JP Morgan invested heavily later in China, mostly on real estate assets, the favous one being Evergrande. Rest is history.

China has already integrated AI Education even in their secondary education. AI is already integrated in many industries in China from automative to medical technologies.
Nvidia's Advanced chips seem to be the only bragging right of the US to convince themselves that they are still ahead. But clearly, the US is not ahead of China.

I put my money on the Chinese. Just look at how much energy they have added last year - 495Gwh v US 20Gwh. In the last 20 yrs. they built 56 nuclear reactors and another 26 under construction while US only built 1. They have Thorium molten salt reactor operational and 6 new reactor designs approved by the IAEA. Now that is truly getting ready for the AI era.
Additionally they already have 5G Advance which is 10x faster than 5G. They are far ahead in automation with fully automated ports, automated dark factories, automated convenience stores, driverless taxs and EVs, EVTOL economy, …. But the key to fast adoption of AI is China is already a digital cashless economy using mobile super Apps used by over 1 billion ppl. and that is the key advantage. And ofc they have more data that is available. US is too far behind.

For any one that have been to China, the adoption of AI in smart machines and large scale systems are well underway, you can see it in your daily lives such as driverless street sweepers, real robo taxs delivery robots, smart drones and smart traffic managements the list goes on and on. Yes US might have some of that, but China is atleast 5 years ahead in adoption. In terms of research and IP, China now is infront with more paper, patents and top talents. China's LLMs are are on par with the best at a small fraction of the cost to train and run, US has a better hardware overall for now, but China is more independent without relying on a third party country such as Taiwan and South Korea. For overall AI economy in a broad sense, China already won the AI race and is pulling future ahead. Once the gpu hardware catches up, its truly game over for the good ol US of A..
