China is the maker of goods. The US is the consumer of goods. If trade stops, Chinese consumers can buy more of what it makes, and it can re-direct exports to other countries. The US will be left with a shortage. China has the upper hand, for the same reason Russia has the upper hand in its economic war with the EU. You can't sanction/boycott a country that was supplying you with basic necessities.

An agreement was done between US and China that US will buy everything which China produces provided Chinese reduces its own consumption…and how china will do this… one child policy. It has a working population to support current economy for another decade.
