What do Koreans think of President Yoon Sook-Yol’s comment that Koreans should forget about what Japan did to Koreans in the past?

I try to keep it in context. I didn’t take it as “forgetting,” as let’s let it go. I took it as, let’s try to move forward, using advantages that will be positive for our country. He should have said something about kee it in our hearts, but taking every advantage we can to improve our country. I believe many don’t know the whole truth and history on BOTH sides.

ONE- Japan provided South Korea with $300 million grant in economic aid and $200 million in loans together with $300 million in loans for private trust, a total of $800 million as "reparation fee" that Japan had to pay for their occupation.

TWO- The extraordinary economic growth that Korea accomplished during the post-war period was largely due to intermediate goods imported from Japan, and technical cooperation and joint ventures with Japanese enterprises.

I grew up pissed at Japan, many were. Why do you think they got nuked twice? I hated Imperial Japan on two fronts. Pearl Harbor was disheartening for me as a U.S. soldier. But facts are facts and I noticed a lot of things from Japan growing up, from food to entertainment. If Koreans really hate Japan, why do they keep buying their products? My point is be true and consistent. If you love Korea, then buy Korean. If you hate the US, then stop buying American.

For fanatics, sometimes I’d like to see what happens if we really shut the door on Japan. Either we should turn the page, or wage war and start a mass rape session on all Japanese women. Let’s be definitive about what we want, and of course we’ll never forget the atrocities of Imperial Japan. I wage war on Japan by embracing Korea and Koreans with my actions and money as much as I can. Whatever that means to you, do it. It’s better than bitching and not doing things that benefit S Korea. Let’s be patriotic about it, rather than boycotting UniGlo when a politician speaks one sided about an issue with Japan.

Personally, the Treaty of Basic Relations Between Korea and Japan 1965, 2015, 2018, and how many more do we need? There are a few Japanese colonization victims alive today in South Korea, and I am not citing any positions. Not so much “forgetting” the history of the atrocity of colonization happened, I would like to see the two countries be more actively seeking to have a harmonious relationship as neighbors and educating the next generation about the tragedy of wars period.

Though, I wish that the Presidents/Politicians were sensitive and mindful about commenting on Korea’s colonization period that affected the country even to this day…

he’s just insane. We don’t really blame or hate the japanese people because the people who exst right now didn’t do those things to koreans in the past. But we should never forget about our past and keep it forever at least for the bravery of the people who fought against those harsh things that japanese people did to them. You know so most of people in Korea don’t really like him.

What do young South Koreans think about Japan?

Depends on what part of Japan we’re talking about.

The government: Most of us dislike Abe as much as we dislike our own past-president. I don’t like the fact that the LDP is socially conservative and works towards History Revisionism and remilitarisation than cooperation, something which has contributed to the tensions in Japan-ROK relations. Basically, the LDP is sen to be at the same level of conservatism or more as the current Korean Saenuri Party.

(The player, YonseiBioTech seems to be Korean, seeing Yonsei is a Korean University. Said player put a pokemon by the name of “ABEISASSHOLE” at the Yasukuni shrine. I think that says enough about how us Koreans feel about the Japanese government.)

Culture: Hell yeah - it’s awesome. One of the most popular places to travel is to Japan, especially among the younger generations. We grow up watching Korean dubbed Japanese anime, and Ghibli has an enormous fan base over here. Japanese is one of the most popular third languages to learn (the Korean education system generally requires us to learn Korean than English, then choose a third language). There’s quite a few anime ‘otakus’ as well - I dabbled in Vocaloid myself in middle school. We find kimonos very pretty, and a lot of Koreans find Japanese characters adorable. My favorite at the moment is:

Cuuuute <3 It helps that quite a lot of aspects of Korean and Japanese societies are similar. We have close enough values, our societies are similarly hierarchical, and we’re homogeneous and (relatively) reserved. We face similar problems in society, politics, and economy. I’d say most Korean youth is positive towards Japanese culture.

Well, except for some of the really weird parts. Like the horse prince game app. I can’t get over this game, to be honest. A game made in Japan, where a girl tries to woo……a horse with a human head. Why.

Food: Because Japanese food deserves a paragraph on its own, obviously. We love Japanese food. Sushi buffets, Japanese themed restaurants or bars, Japanese castellas etc. I have to confess that I actually prefer Sake over any Korean alcoholic drink. Anyways, there’s a mutual acknowledgement that when it comes to food, Japan takes things from all over the world and turns it into something better. Except for Kimchi, that is ;)

(A place I visited with my friend. This place is in Korea, not Japan. But the theme is certainly Japanese.)

Society: A lot of people like how cultured Japanese society is and how the people are educated on societal norms. I’d say us Koreans have a lot to learn from the Japanese. On the other hand, I dislike the extent to which social pressure is put on the Japanese people, and would rather avoid said pressure. Koreans have to put with enough hell due to competitive pressure - we don’t need societal pressure on top of that.

However, some people also dislike Japanese society and instead think that the Japanese people don’t treat others truthfully. In Korea, sincerity is sometimes emphasised at the cost of politeness. In Japan, politeness is sometimes emphasised at the cost of sincerity. Koreans who prefer bluntness tend to find Japanese society difficult and ambiguous.

Future: This is where it gets controversial. Some Koreans believe the past is the past and that South Korea should move on, especially as we grow farther from the past and indifferent to it. On the other hand, most Korean youth still find it offensive that Japanese history textbooks refuse to be truthful on what had happened. That’s the reason for most of any anti-Japanese sentiment really.

However, I’m actually quite optimistic on our prospects for the future.

Despite the lurking issue of history revisionism, the Korean and Japanese millennial generations are starting to have more positive views of each other. Less people are susceptible to the prejudices and hatred that is held by some of the older generations, and as the internet ensures that Korean/Japanese people have more interactions with each other, we’re starting to see each other as fellow human beings, and ones with pretty similar cultural values at that.

Overall, I’d say that while the view of Japan isn’t completely great, it’s certainly improving and becoming more positive.

Because that guy regards himself as a Japanese, it’s natural.

The thing the voters who chose him in presidential election in spite of persuasion from surrounding aides have to do is kneeling to compatriots, if they still regard themselve are Koreans.

The situation is more serious than you think. I don't know who they are, but they take the distinction between Korea and Japan very lightly and are trying to artificially merge the two peoples. I guarantee that the attempt will fail, and the moment the culprits are revealed, they will receive long-lasting hatred from the Koreans.
