The answer is “YES”. I meet a lot of kind South Korean people in my life, and on the Internet I will find a completely different scene.

As a Chinese studying in South Korea, I never see any positive news about China reported by south Korean media. When South Korean news media report on China, they often change the content to portray China as evil.

All the comments on YouTube about China in South Korea are wishing ther personal attacks. You can get high popularity by scolding China. I've seen many Korean youtubers get millions of hits for their videos attacking China by citing fake news made up by western media.

The questions like “Do this country’s people like something?” is tricky to answer because the answer is “Depends on people.”

Personally, I don’t dislike China. I think China has a beautiful culture and great industries with lots of potentials there. People are brilliant, and they work hard. Although there is a tension between two countries at the moment, I don’t see the reason to fear China, and I think we can be good friends to each other.

We have been neighbors for more than 2,000 years. During these years, we had wars, peace, and even love affairs. We learned a lot from Chinese and we had to work hard to become an independent country from Chinese dynasties. I believe Koreans don’t dislike nor fear China.

Fear? Not yet. Although this is changing fast, as China is gaining more military and economic power. I, for one, am quite scared of having a superpower China right in front of our doorstep. Korean Peninsula will be under China’s influence. They will continue to buy our land, our companies and basically maneuver us in a scale that was unprecedented.

Dislike? Not exactly, but we look down on them and ridicule them. It’s similar to how Americans view Mexcans. Koreans tend to look down on any country who is less developed than Korea. But we do not have any hatred towards China. We see China as a geopolitical partner who we would have to co-operate in order to navigate the mean streets of international politics.

If anything, the imbalance between China and Korea comes from the difference in size, not anything else. China’s a freaking giant. Korea is a tiny guy. It’s never going to be a balanced relationship. But there are no inherent hatred or drama (like we do with Japan).

While studying abroad in Canada, I’ve met many Chinese people and they treated Koreans as friends. It was Chinese majority and Korean minority situation. And yet they did not exclude Koreans from their social events. I’ve found Chinese people to be much more inclusive than Koreans or Japanese.

Individually speaking, South Koreans generally get along well with Chinese. Similar culture, same race, etc. But, when it comes to government - Korea and China are fundamentally different, and neither trusts each other. They are polar opposites.

Western Decline

The time is really interesting, and now it seems that this view is almost the same as the monkey.

Now South Korea's GDP is less than 10% of China's, and it will be less than 5% in the future.

1.jpg

2.jpg

South Korea's economy has been in a downturn recently, don't worry, it will get worse in the future.

This Korean advertises that there are 5 million reservists in South Korea, are you an idiot?

The population of Northeast China is twice that of South Korea, and the population of overseas Chinese is more than the native population of South Korea.

Probably young Koreans have a dislike for China because they are a heavy consumer of American news outlet.

Just go on Naver (S.Korea search engine) and type in China. You will see many sources are from NYTimes, BBC, CNN etc.

People that have interact with Chinese before usually have a neutral view.

What do South Koreans think of China?

With mixed emotions.

Economically:

People understand that its a big neighbor that you want to be friends with and not piss off, and it is a source of great wealth for South Koreans (as a trading partner, as a place to do business, etc.)

They also understand that it is a giant that is building steam and effectively competing with Korea in many areas of business so we see them as a competitor

The sheer awe of scale. People understand that this country is a ginormous monster of a powerhouse. The typical expression: "their middle class, which is a sliver of their entire population, is larger than our entire Korean population"

Culturally:

Folks recognize there is a lot of cultural cross pollenization and cultural influence from China. Historically a lot of cultural elements were from the Chinese. At the same time we are proud of our cultural independence and uniqueness that has formed over centuries and today we seem to have a superiority complex over the Chinese, as far as cultural suaveness goes.

There is a stereotype (justifiable or unjustifiable, up for debate) that the Chinese are crude, uncouth, uncultured, etc. Most of this is formed from the typical Korean's interaction with a Chinese tourist (or a mob of Chinese trourists), who have built a reputation for not behaving well while visiting other places. It is important to note that, this was the exact image of a Korean when visiting other countries only a few decades ago. And it is also the image of a Japanese tourist even before that. I see this as a phase that a newly developed and affluent country's folks go through as they intermingle with other cultures. I am sure the British were equally appalled at the crudeness of Americans when they first started to go to Britain in the 19th century.

Politically:

There is a lot of envy here. The size and might of the country lets China face off against the US, Russia and Japan on equal terms. Not so for Korea, given its position inbetween China and Japan, its dependence on foreign trade with US and China and Japan, and the military presence (dependent on US for a meaningful part of military capabilities)

Fear? I dont thinks so, we have a inside joke that says “korea is the only country in the world that looks down on china and japan.” Although I feel like we should to some extent, considering how our country really depends on exporting and china has a big market. I think there are some koreans online  dont get the reality.: china is a important country to us, whether we like them or not.

It depends on time and space.

For example, the winter in the year of 1950,

south koreans may fear China very much,

since south koreans fled across the 38 line like bunches of big rats, running all the way from Yalu river.

THE MASS MEDIA LIKES TO STIR THE POT.

THE USA LIKES TO TURN NATION AGAINST EACH OTHER.

THE USA IS AN EVIL “FAILED EMPIRE”

SOUTH KOREANS AND CHINESE AS A WHOLE GET ALONG VERY WELL TOGETHER. POLITICS ASIDE.

MOST PEOPLE ARE SMART ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND A GOVERNMENT IS NOT ITS PEOPLE.

THE KEY IS TO BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER. OR AT LEAST HAVE A MUTUAL RESPECT AND NOT GIVE INTO THE USA AND THEIR EVIL MOTIVES.

Koreans do dislike China. fear China? eat my shorts.

If we have war with China I shall join Korean military voluntarily.

Korea has about 5 million reserved army of which members have completed more than 2 years of full military training and drill.

We don’t want war with China but China invades us then that’s the day when China breaks into several different small countries.

We Koreans fear China? Hell no. How dare?
