China has moved from exporting cars to bringing entire auto industry ecosystems, building up production capacity in Europe and boosting partnerships with local companies. Arthur D. Little's automotive expert Philipp Seidel tells FRANCE 24 that while tariffs and quotas can buy time, EU carmakers must improve their own competitiveness and not become too dependent on Chinese suppliers. But first, we look at the latest IMF global growth forecasts and warning about rising debt.

Here is the answer the guest tried avoid answering in the end: German cars are not luxury vehicles at all compared to Chinese cars.

In the US, we drove a GLS 450 made in 2024. In China, I have a Zeekr 009 and Huawei M9 now. It was a painful experience for my family to travel around in the GLS. Extremely cramped, terrible seat quality, terrible ride quality, jerky acceleration and breaking, very cheap doors, poor suspension, horrific layout, and just generally cheap materials. There was no TV in the second row. Android auto kept disconnecting. The voice controls are really bad. Instead of dual wireless phone chargers by the driver, you get a MOUSEPAD because I guess they couldnt afford to make a touch screen... You keep accidently touching the mousepad when you try to rest your hand there

The HUD was also tiny. We had lane keep assist because this one was from Canada where the feature is banned in American models. We could immediately tell why ... The car kept drifting out of the lane and then emergency turn back in. It was horrible and dangerous.

我在美国开过2024款奔驰GLS450。我在中国有一辆极氪009和一辆华为问界M9。全家坐奔驰GLS450出行体验很差。车内空间特别挤，座椅质感差，底盘颠簸。加速刹车顿挫感明显，车门质感廉价，悬挂不行，车内布局不合理，用料整体很低档。第二排没有电视。安卓车载系统频繁断连。语音控制很难用。驾驶位没有双无线充电板，只配了一块触控板，估计是舍不得做触摸屏。手搭在旁边休息时，总会误触这块触控板。

抬头显示尺寸也很小。这辆车是加拿大版本，带车道保持，美版反而禁用这项功能。我们一下就明白美版为什么取消了。车子经常跑偏，然后猛地强行拉回车道，体验很差，还很危险。

No zero gravity seats, no massage in the rear, horrible audio system with no Dolby Atmos, tiny screen for driver information, no blind spot camera display when you turn on the left or right blinkers, poor braking power, weak acceleration that is quite jerky, less than half the horsepower of the Zeekr 009, no fridge, no dining table (and the Zeekr fold out table is much higher quality than maybach S class), really cheap lights that do not illuminate well at night, far less fancy ambient lights, does not have the smooth automatic doors and brake pedal close, does not have huaweis smooth and fast retractable step, no headrest speakers to separate things like having only the driver hear calls and navigation so the rest of the car can listen to movies and music uninterrupted, and no free wifi provided inside the vehicle.

Anyways, you guys who don't believe it, the Shanghai auto show is in 2027.

You don't need to compare a Huawei M9 to a Mercedes GLS 450. The GLS 450 is directly worse than many Chinese cars that cost $30,000 to $40,000. It's pretty awful. At this point, you are buying German cars for nostalgia.

而且奔驰GLS450没有零重力座椅，后排不带按摩。音响差，不支持杜比全景声。仪表显示屏很小。打左右转向灯时，不会弹出盲区摄像头画面。刹车力度一般，加速偏弱还有顿挫，马力不到极氪009的一半。没有车载冰箱，没有小桌板。极氪的折叠桌质感比迈巴赫S级还好。车灯廉价，夜间照明效果差。氛围灯效果简陋。没有顺滑的自动门，也不能踩刹车关门。没有华为那种顺滑快速的电动伸缩踏板。头枕没有分区音响，没法做到只有驾驶员听到通话和导航，车内其他人不受干扰看视频听音乐。车内也不提供免费无线网络。

不信的人可以等2027年上海车展亲自感受。

其实不用拿华为M9和奔驰GLS450对比。很多售价三四万美元的中国车，体验都比奔驰GLS450强。现在买德国车，买的纯粹是情怀。

Instead of every story being about tariffs between the US and Germany or France the EU, look at the bigger picture. The European Political Community, 47 countries from Iceland to Turkey to Ukraine, plus Canada, add up to roughly $33.9 trillion in GDP, more than the United States at about $32.4 trillion (IMF 2026 figures). Canada still sends over 70% of its exports to the US. If Canada, Europe, the UK and Turkey traded more with each other, everyone would be less exposed to one country’s tariff swings. More trade among friends makes for a better world.
