Singapore's government has stepped in after a wave of racist and xenophobic comments targeting Indians surfaced online amid discussions over the Nepal floods and Singapore Airlines' investment in Air India.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has warned that Singapore must never allow prejudice against any community to become accepted or normalised. Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam has also ordered a police investigation into what he described as “shameful, nasty, totally unacceptable” racist comments.

Some of the posts targeted Singaporeans missing after the devastating Nepal floods, while others attacked Singapore Airlines and its leadership over the Air India investment. Authorities say unchecked online abuse could deepen mistrust between communities and threaten Singapore's carefully maintained multiracial harmony.

新加坡本轮族群争议的爆发，源于两起看似无关、却精准戳中民众敏感点的公共事件。

一是尼泊尔洪灾遇难者身份的问题。近日爆发的尼泊尔泥石流严重灾害，导致9名新加坡公民不幸失踪、遇难。一些网友根据遇难者、失踪者的外貌、姓名特征，主观判定其为新加坡的印度裔，进而抛出“不是纯正新加坡人”“没必要全力救援”等言论。

另一起则是近期的新航投资问题。最近，深陷亏损同时还要转型的印度航空，向两大股东（塔塔集团和新加坡航空）寻求约15亿美元的注资。其中新航持有印度航空约25.1%的股权。这一消息传回新加坡，网友一下子就炸了锅。

有人公开表达反对意见，认为新加坡人“没有义务养活印航”。恰好，新航的控股股东——新加坡主权基金淡马锡的CEO迪兰·皮莱是印度裔。舆论很快形成了“印度裔CEO花新加坡人的钱，去养印度航空”的猜疑链，围绕印度裔公职人员的争议迅速扩大。

Air India is one of the worst airlines in the world with no proper standards or food. Even Business class is absolutely pathetic. I travelled to New Delhi from Singapore and that was my worst experience in that the toilets in business class were so unclean, there were very few non vegetarian food that ran out and they started serving vegetarian food. The seats were very uncomfortable. I cancelled my return flight in Air india to come back by Singapore Airlines. I will never ever fly Air India.
