They were used plenty in Syria for air-to-ground strikes and electronic warfare. By all accounts, their stealth tech works very well. But they were too expensive, hence why the USAF cut their order from 750, to 195, and instead decided to opt for the F-35, which is much cheaper and almost as capable.
Also, more export-able. The best analogy I can think of to compare it to is that the F-22 is like the Russian T-64 tank, and the F-35 is like the T-72. The T-72 is cheaper, easier to mass-produce, and easier to strip the top-secret tech out of for export models as compared to the T-64. The T-64 was never exported, and I sincerely doubt the F-22 fleet will ever be sold off.

America is not dumb and they didn't release sensitive info about their jets but people keeps rotating made up numbers acting like it's a fact.
