China has developed an AI system that claims to verify nuclear warheads with pinpoint accuracy. This technology uses deep learning to distinguish actual warheads from decoys without revealing the weapon’s internal design.

Chinese scientists have allegedly developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that can tell the difference between real nuclear warheads and fake ones (decoys). This is the first time in the world that AI has been used for this kind of arms control task.

The research for this system was published in April by the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). China’s position in the global nuclear disarmament talks has stalled currently, but this discovery could help the government improve its position on this subject.

中国开发了一种人工智能系统，声称可以精确验证核弹头。这项技术使用深度学习来区分真实弹头与诱饵，同时不泄露武器的内部设计。

Navigating the challenges

The project, which is a joint venture proposed by Chinese and American scientists more than a decade ago, has faced three monumental challenges.

The first one was to test and train the AI system, for which the scientists required access to highly sensitive nuclear data, including real warhead details.

Secondly, the team had to convince the Chinese military officials that the system wouldn’t risk leaking top-secret information.

Third, they needed to convince other countries – the United States in particular – to move away from outdated Cold War-style verification methods.

So far, only the first step has been achieved. The CIAE team

“Due to the classified nature of nuclear warheads and component designs, specific data cannot be disclosed here,” the CIAE team wrote in their Atomic Energy Science and Technology paper.

Maintaining the balance

The project has underlined the tricky balance the teams need to achieve between open scientific progress and kee nuclear weapons information secret.

The AI system is also known as ‘Verification Technical Scheme for Deep Learning Algorithm Based on Interactive Zero Knowledge Protocol.’ It uses a mix of advanced encryption and nuclear science to do the job.

The researchers ran millions of computer simulations of nuclear components – some with real weapon-grade uranium and others made to look real using harmless materials like lead or low-enriched uranium.

A deep learning system was used ot study the movement of neutrons through these materials. Over time, the AI achieved commendable accuracy in distinguishing between the real and fake warheads.
