New Delhi: Tesla is not interested in manufacturing cars in India, but is keen to have showrooms to sell its vehicles, heavy industry minister H D Kumaraswamy said on Monday.

Officials said the EV giant's plans is focused on importing cars into the country, amid indications that Tesla is eyeing concessions under the India-US bilateral trade agreement to sell cheaper cars in India, without any commitment to manufacture locally. A top ministry official said since the deliberation with industry started to promote manufacturing of electric cars by global players, Tesla has not shown interest. tnn

Country of manufacture matters. Tesla will be allowed to import ONLY "Made in USA" units into India. There won't be many takers for Tesla in India anyway. In other words, it is all just "cosmetic".

@AzadHind572 Tesla's target are the rich people who'll buy the cars for status just like they buy Lamborghini and Ferrari, not common office people. We basically opened our market for them but didn't get access to the American market for our cars. The government is under some compulsion. Adani's arrest warrant could be a reason.

The governent has insisted on localcized manufacturing/sourcing to certain mininum thresholds as time passes. Also there are limits in place for them to not mass import everything to have in inventory. Go through the actual deal terms and dont beleive whatever the politicians ruling/otherwise say.

​ @AzadHind572 you do know that BYD cars are selling in India, and many rich indians buy them because well...... they are very beautiful cars. I saw some of them in Jaipur recently. People will buy them regardless if they are Chinese manufacturer or not because they only care about the status and style.

Tesla is not luxury car brand it's budget car brand in usa and Europe , it's quility and panel gap are big problem all over world , rich people will buy mercedes and bmw , even skoda and vw have better quility and luxury in it's price range . Tesla don't have any unique proposition in india neither it's budget, luxury or even self driving also will not work

People in comments need to understand how business works. Any business isnt going to invest billions of $ if they arent sure about profitability. Building an EV car and an iPhone are two completely different thing. India doesnt have that many customers for tesla to even consider building a factory here >50 million, and age old infrastructure, with unskilled labour, poor roads, resource allocation and other bureaucracy are vital aspect that makes India less competitive in world.

Tesla cars will be expensive. So, firstly they want to check whether their cars sell in India or not...if Indian consumer shows interest and buys the car even if the car price is high...After they may start manufacturing cars in india.

India is not ideal for Tesla because it doesn't have the freeways and also the charging stations to power up electric cars. It take a massive project by government to build roads and electrical charging stations which India isn't going to do right now and most that will either be in west in the more modern cities or around New Delhi and that it the rest of country will be left out.

@SamirSeth Sure, most country think that a nation like India is like America or Europe. It is not. Russia, China, and India do not have that kind of infrastructure through out the entire country. If you are from America or Europe you take that for granted. Most nations have freeways around their major cities and that it. So US State of California has the "Pacific coast high way" going down the length of California. It is quite beautiful. But Russia, China, and India has no such thing there times you might just run out of road and you find your self on a make shift dirt road in the middle of no where with no street signs what so ever to guide you.

If that actually happened no one would be able to move, given our population density. Even at current levels our cities are choked. Plus we would drown in our oil imports. The only answer is better public transport. We have 26 cities building metros. Also more two-wheelers are where we will go, rather than cars.

While all this is true, there will never be enough roads to support a car ownership density like USA or even China. We have less than 1/10th of the car ownership of USA and our cities are choked. If we reach their level of car ownership, we will only have roads, no buildings. The ONLY answer is public transport, better footpaths, and fewer private cars.
