Correction: Tejas Naval version was a technology demonstrator and will not be inducted into service. Instead India is develo TEDBF fighter jet especially for carrier based operations and till the time of induction of TEDBF, Indian navy has ordered Rafael M as their new carrier based jet.

People here doesn't  seem to understand the importance of this aircraft. It is definitely not the best in the world. But india needs a large number of fighter aircrafts to deal with the chinese Nd pakistani threat at its border that spans tens of thousands of kilometers. It is not economically feasible in the long run to continously buy foreign fighters to meet growing demands. 2 hands no matter how strong they are can't stop 10 punches

Tejas was initially designed as a point defence fighter and hence the small size and range. Later more features were added to turn it into a multirole light combat fighter. The 70% rule. Instead of building planes that are 100% as good as rivals and costs that go up exponentially for the top end performance, they just built planes that are 70% as good for a fraction of the cost. USA did that with the F-5 export fighter decades ago.

India should work together with South Korea to further develop the KF-21. win win for both.  South Korea can replace non-paying Indonesia with India, India gets a plane that will have a naval variant for their carrier, economies of scale, same engine as the future Tejas upgrade, and the ability to produce it on their own.  It will be a true Asia fighter.
