India 17th nation to hit 20,000 Covid-19 cases; death toll crosses 600
NEW DELHI: India became the world’s 17th country to record 20,000 Covid-19 cases, crossing the grim milestone on a day when Maharashtra, Rajasthan and West Bengal recorded their biggest single-day rise in infections. There was a spike in deaths as well, with 49 on Tuesday, taking the toll to 645.
The total number of cases stood at 20,083 late on Tuesday, as per reports from states, having risen by 1,493 during the day — the second highest daily rise after Sunday’s spike of 1,613 cases. Over a third of the new cases came from Maharashtra. At 552, the state equalled its own record of fresh cases set on Sunday. Mumbai alone reported 419 cases and 12 deaths.
Rajasthan (159) and West Bengal (53) also saw the sharpest spike for the respective states even as the infection maintained its surge in Gujarat, where 239 more people tested positive.
Gujarat, which has emerged as the biggest Covid hotspot after Maharashtra, crossed the 2,000-mark in number of cases and overtook Delhi to claim the No.2 spot in the country. Compared to 35 days taken by Maharashtra and 45 by Delhi – only two other Indian states with more than 2,000 cases – Gujarat reach the grim milestone in 34 days. The total tally of cases in the state now stands at 2,178.
On Tuesday, as many as 15 Covid-19 patients died in Ahmedabad city. Two deaths were reported in Surat and one each from Bhavnagar and Bharuch.
Maharashtra’s count of coronavirus cases crossed 5,000. The state’s latest and fastest addition of 1,000 cases has come in just two days. Mumbai, which recorded its second highest single-day rise in cases with 419 new detections, mainly contributed to the state’s surge in cases. Over a lakh people in the state are now under home or institutional quarantine.
The number of Covid-19 deaths in the country also soared to 640 with 45 deaths being reported from various states. Maharashtra and Gujarat recorded the maximum 19 deaths each, taking their respective tolls to 251 and 90.

Why should we worry? When every year in India more than 4 lakh DIE of TB, have Indian men STOPPED SPITTING? Have the state go nments and municipal corporations here EVER implemented the EXISTING punishment against spitting? Spitting is one of the main causes of TB spreading. At least 80% here are immune to TB. In fact, due to our dirty surroundings and uncivic habits, most of us have become immune to many diseases. This coronavirus disease will get added to this long list.
Immediately Army should come down with testing kits in every inch of the country. Every citizen should be tested. Dont believe Mamta Banerjee type people who are fraudently under stating their figures.
Why everyone is not tested in Gujarat?
Highest cases is in Gujarat...
Congress should have build hospitals and we would not have been in such a bad position
Some people are still not sincere with stopping the spread
All good done by Modi has been undone by Tablighi Mullahs.

Instead of focusing only on lockdown, govt should put more resources on finding a cure.

Don't we need to lockdown more seriously till May end....... we're touching more than 1000 cases daily
Absolutely...this is going to go in till September at best. If not a nationwide lockdown, statewide where the hotspots are.
It is tragic that the Modi administration imagined that mere lockdowns are a perfect panacea to control the spread of the virus without backing it up with other measures like : track, trace, test and isolate. It is almost over a month since the lockdown and still the States doesn't have testing kits nor adequate number of PPEs to protect our medical fraternity and frontline Corona warriors. Many of them have become victims to the virus including journalists on the field. And yet ridiculously the Health Minister claims that still there is no community spread.
20k is a huge number. India had an impressive GDP growth rate for over two decades. Not sure why it never translated into a more robust health and education system.
congress govt didn't plan well for this
Neither did the Modi govt. :)
This is all Business man ....all the testing kits and equipment is coming from china why cant we make it right here where is that make in india slogan gone ...even when we know the kits are faultywe r beiliving them
India never focused on manufacturing only service sector.
Wait for the lockdown to get relaxed. People will come on the streets as if nothing had happened, they will forget Covid, and then again you will find a huge spurge in cases. We have to change our habits and become more disciplined.

In a country of 1.3 billion only 50 thousand test was made with faulty Chinese kit. Now go nment has imported another 65 thousand faulty testing Chinese kits without any qualify check. It is quite likely they have send us the faulty kits returned by Spain and Italy. Sad that during crises our go nment is depending on China.

How long our health workers will bear this forced jail. They too have family and responsibility. They too will give away one day.
Even after 28 days' lock down, people are found not following the norms. Strict action required.
Only apologize, they should punished severely, by destroying their economy
