I believe China does not see this as a competition—it simply needs to keep moving forward at its own pace.
After all, under the Wolf Amendment, the U.S. bars NASA and its allies from working with China—so China has had no choice but to chart its own course entirely on its own.
I think China is OK with letting America landing on the moon first. Unless, once it gets there first, America declares it has discovered a new “New World”, again; or annexes the whole Moon as its 53rd state, just behind Canada and Greenland.
