China is definitely ahead of the completely pollution free aviation because the use of hydrogen as fuel needs a long term redesign of the airport infrastructure. Principle of conservation of energy is your answer: It takes the same amount of power to split water into hydrogen and oxygen that it releases when recombining it with the oxygen thus produced minus efficiency. If you split water on the plane and combine that hydrogen with air, which has to be the case, you will be losing a huge amount of power input. The storage problem can be done by using the same hydrogen storage that is used in Thermonuclear bombs, but the non-proliferation of bomb parts/tech is problem. There has been many, water/hydrogen designs that was patented and working prototypes. They all died in mysteries ways and prototypes and schematics gone up in flames or just taken and put in a warehouse with "TOPMEN" ref "raiders of the lost ark" scene. You can't patent water!

Why not store the hydrogen in the form of ammonia? No cryogenics necessary. No volume penalty. And the hydrogen is a lot easier to extract from ammonia than from water.

Why not just use Amonia. Amonia is a better carrier of hydrogen than Hydogen. When compressed to about 3 atmosphers it has better energy density than traditional jet fuel.
