Scientists in China have developed a new solar-powered desalination technology that can turn seawater into fresh water without electricity.

Desalination has always been an energy-hungry process that turns salt water into fresh water, making it largely the preserve of rich nations with abundant fossil fuel reserves. Desalination usually requires a huge amount of energy and is often expensive. However, researchers have created a new material that uses sunlight more efficiently, making the process much cheaper.

The researchers have designed a specialized method to weave nanoparticles into a three-dimensional photothermal evaporation material that absorbs solar energy to drive desalination. The tests showed that the material achieved a solar absorption rate of up to 90.2% while cutting the energy required to evaporate the same volume of seawater by 45.7%.

The system successfully converted seawater into fresh water using only natural sunlight without depending on any external power sources. The process was conducted at a small trial site, in which the fresh water produced was enough to irrigate 5 square meters of farmland for a full growth cycle.

After 2 years, the team believed that using this technology, the cost of producing water would reduce below that of bottled water, offering a low-cost and sustainable solution to water shortages, especially in regions with limited access to electricity.

传统海水淡化工艺十分耗费能源,以往只有化石燃料储备充足的富裕国家才有条件大规模应用。常规淡化设备能耗巨大,运行成本居高不下。而科研团队研发出一种新型材料,能大幅提升太阳能利用率,显著降低淡化成本。

研究人员通过特殊工艺将纳米颗粒织造成三维光热蒸发材料,依靠吸收太阳能驱动海水淡化。实验数据显示,该材料光能吸收率最高可达90.2%,蒸发同等体量海水所需能耗直接降低45.7%。

这套设备仅依靠自然光就能完成海水淡化,完全不需要外接电源。小型试验场地的实测结果表明,产出的淡水足以满足5平方米农田一整个生长周期的灌溉用水。

研发团队预估,经过两年落地优化后,该技术的产水成本将低于瓶装水。对于电力匮乏地区而言,这是一套低成本、可持续的缺水解决方案。

Actually the technology is pretty simple. A se fixed on a black metal plate is suspended below the tempered glass cover on a solar evaporator. A black cotton cloth dip in the sea water kept in the evaporator works as a wick causing the sea water to rise up to the se and gets heated up to form hot vapour which rises up further to be deposited as condensation on the underside of the tempered glass , rolling down to be collected as pure water. Simple technology which could be replicated all over the world to treat most kinds of polluted waters, provided sunlight is available. A further tweak to improve productivity is to preheat the input water using the heat from sunlight. This would help more water to be distilled in unit time.

其实这项技术原理很简单。太阳能蒸发器里,一块海绵固定在黑色金属板上,悬挂在钢化玻璃罩下方。蒸发器内有海水,一块黑色棉布泡在水里充当吸水棉芯,把海水吸到海绵上。海水受热变成水蒸气,往上飘,碰到钢化玻璃底部就凝结成水珠,顺着玻璃流下来收集起来就是纯净水。只要有阳光,这套简易设备全球都能复刻,还能处理大部分污水。如果再做一点改良,利用太阳能提前预热待处理的水,单位时间内能蒸馏出更多淡水,提升产水效率。

Cost wide and scale wide, it is Israel that started over 30 years ago and became a major agricultural produce supplier to EU ! Cost is around USD $0.41 per cubic meter water. Singapore has been desalinating seawater commercially for 21 years!

Using solar evaporation ponds, the brine is concentrated until it reaches a specific density (around 25 °Bé). At this point, the sodium chloride (NaCl) selectively crystallizes. The crystals are then collected, washed, and refined.

Fair catch on the framing — 20 liters per person per day is the WHO minimum for basic drinking, cooking, and hygiene needs, not a full shower-and-laundry lifestyle standard. It's emergency and basic survival level water, not comfortable daily living. Worth being precise about that distinction.
