I am surprised China isn’t ahead on digital payments. They are truly cashless. Even bus and train tickets - don't need other apps. Monster app like WeChat or alipay works. My 5 day trip to Shanghai I only paid cash for one bus fare.( was struggling with Alipay initially)

Your 'surprise' is correct. But if u look again, he refers to "real-time digital payment" rather than broadly defined "digital payment", u can simply understand RTP as "bank to bank transfer". Alipay/Wepay aren't RTP, they are in charge of funds & participate in fund settlements.
