China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday criticized the U.S. for seizing an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, reiterating its opposition to what it called “illegal unilateral sanctions.” The seizure on Wednesday marked a dramatic escalation in President Donald Trump's campaign to pressure strongman Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro by cutting off access to oil revenues that have long been the lifeblood of Venezuela's economy. Since the first Trump administration imposed punishing oil sanctions on Venezuela in 2017, Maduro's government has relied on scores of such oil tankers to smuggle their crude into global supply chains. At a daily briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun also commented on Washington’s plan to form a coalition aimed at safeguarding the global supply chain of rare earth and artificial intelligence.
