US President Donald Trump has signed a new proclamation on Friday (US time) introducing a $100,000 annual fee for H-1B visa applications, along with other changes to the skilled foreign worker programme, which has been under scrutiny for years.

Originally designed to attract exceptional foreign talent for specialised technical roles, the H-1B programme has evolved into a channel for workers accepting salaries around $60,000 annually—well below the $100,000-plus compensation typical for American technology professionals, according to AP reports.

Additionally, White House staff secretary Will Scharf said, "One of the most abused visa systems is the H1-B non-immigrant visa programme. This is supposed to allow highly skilled labourers who work in fields that Americans don't work in to come into the United States of America. What this proclamation will do is raise the fee that companies pay to sponsor H-1B applicants to $100,000. This will ensure that the people they're bringing in are actually very highly skilled and that they're not replaceable by American workers.

Majority of H1-B visas are secured by Indians. The lottery system was the worst method of granting the visa. U.S. should consider a point and merit based system like Canada, Australia and New Zealand to get the smartest and the best candidates for higly skilled jobs which cannot be filled by the locals. These immigrants may be eligible to apply for Green Card after having worked in the U.S. for say, 5 or 7 years..

Good move. Reverse the brain drain. I was a Project Manager in a MNC and from my team of 30 almost all are now in the US. I remember one girl started crying to be sent to the US. She has a L1. The team lead did not think she was good enough and had not recommended her! She eventually went from another Project and is now fighting for a Green card. We used to send them at maxmum $ 60k -$64 K salaries. That was all we were allowed to give them. The company made a super profit as it would charge 120 K for them from the client! Sad to say I was a part of the system. I personally never even had a passport and refused to go as I have my parents and Inlaws here to take care of. Besides happy here. Recently oppurtunities in India are also increased. With the advent of AI tools there is no need to be physically in the US. We can sit at home and build good sellable , useful apps. Use your brains, live in India and make millions. The US , EU, or Australia treat you as a second class citizen. Why go there to live in ghettos surrounded by your own folks. Not allowed to live in white areas and be treated like
