Boost for Maldives president Muizzu as his party wins majority in Parliament

NEW DELHI: Facing his first and toughest test yet since taking over as the Maldives' president last year, Mohamed Muizzu came up trumps in the parliamentary polls Sunday with the main ruling party, People's National Congress (PNC), poised to win a “super majority “ in People's Majlis.

The outcome will be seen by many as a double whammy for India as it unshackles Muizzu, who came to power on the back of his India Out campaign, from opposition oversight at a time his government is moving away from the archipelago nation's India First policy and tilting towards China.

The PNC majority is significant as it also comes in the middle of the Maldives' deeply fragmented political landscape which saw even Muizzu's mentor and another pro-China leader, Abdulla Yameen, falling out with him and forming his own political party. The results are a major setback for the pro-India and main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which was ho to retain majority in Parliament and facilitate a strong legislative oversight of the executive. Using its strength in Parliament, it had recently got Muizzu to ratify an anti-defection law that would have prevented defections from the MDP to the ruling party in the event of a close contest.

According to reports from Male late in the evening, the PNC had managed to secure a super majority by wng more than 60 seats in the 93-member Majlis. This doesn’t include the independents who contested with support from the ruling alliance. The last and also the first party to win a super majority was the MDP in 2019, when it won 65 seats.

It is quite clear now that the people of Maldives have, by and large, have an anti India bias. The Indian Government should take note of this and act accordingly. No more Mr Nice Guy stuff. No favourable treatment on the grounds of neighborhood first and insist on repayment of all loans as agreed. No deferments. And yes we all should never plan a holiday in the Maldives.
