IAF grounds MiG-21 fighter aircraft fleet pending investigation into Rajasthan crash
NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has grounded the entire fleet of MiG-21 fighter aircraft till the checks are carried out and investigations into the reasons behind the crash over Rajasthan earlier this month are ascertained.
Three people lost their lives in the crash when a MiG-21 Bison aircraft airborne from Suratgarh air base crashed over Hanumangarh on May 8.
"The MiG-21 fleet has been grounded till the investigations are over and reasons for the crash are ascertained," senior defence officials said.
The MiG-21 aircraft variants started getting inducted into the Indian Air Force over five decades ago and are on the verge of being phased out.
There are only three MiG-21 squadrons operating in the IAF and all of them are going to be phased out by the early part of 2025, they said.
With Russia the deal is always direct with Government. Ruling parties in those days purchased this Aircraft only to collect big kick backs.
When MIGs were in the 1970s, they were the latest and because of the Bangladesh war and atomic bomb test, we had no good relationship with the US. India did not buy any outdated aircraft but whatever was available at that time. IDIOT.
Mig 21 is the world's most mass produced fighter jet of all time. It was a great aircraft when it was inducted.
modi did rafale scam. reduced number of jets to 36 from 126 and created a national security issue
Mig 21 was gold standard in the 1960s. Not like Russian equipment now.
The MIG21 has always been known to be sub-standard. But, we love Putin bahi, and all his worthless toys./ Let's place another large order for the MIGs. Of course, Russia has always stood by us...hehe.
It was not sub standard in the 1960s. Yes. Putins recent toys are just junk. But this was Gold back then.
At that time the US F16s were considered more sophisticated. The MIGs were heavier, but could fly longer distances (compared to the F16 - smaller). But the distance should not have mattered to India. It's enemies are across the border. Pilot acumen and experience weighs in a lot too (just like an automobile drive)
Not much but I have a few hours of experience flying the MiG 21 (about 250). The aircraft is not substandard and there are reasons for its crashes. So lets not blame the aircraft or the pilot or the technicians for these crashes. Lets look at how cilians contributed directly to these crashes and I can give more than enough examples how civilian greed and wrong actions resulted in loss if lives and aircraft. For example do you know how many airfields are encroached upon by civil population and pose a flight safety hazard at critical phases of flight.
Our dear PM should take a ride in them and prove bis 56 inch chest. These politicians are solely responsible for the lives lost
Send it to Bone Graveyard and Museums
All bcoz of Italian madam and later her son who tried all his antics to differ the purchase of even 36 Rafael aircraft from France. CONgress is solely to blame for the delay in purchase. From the sanctioned 42 squadron, IAF is struggling to even maintain the basic 32 squadron today.
You don't even know how many rafales were to be bought during UPA! So it's useless to reply to you!
No use in going back to the purchase deal and induction by which government.Remedial actions is the need of the hour.outdated aircrafts in fact.
Congress sole responsible for Mig-21 tragedy, all have made money from sub standard planes, corruption money divided among the Congi Chor.
Modi Ji is running a government that works. This is the right decision. The MIGs should be grounded permanently.
Our fighting jets pilots are the main problem as they needs good training.
all this junk was purchased by babus and ministes who got wined and dined and shown 'good times' by our russian friends and of course loads of cash
Mig21 Flying Coffin
IAF permanently ban MIG 21 and young pilot life is very important
Time we buy non-russian weapon systems.
