Firstly, SE Asia especially Thailand, either don't require visa or have visa on arrival. India requires you to apply for a visa beforehand and after being through that process it can be quite a hassle and put off people who are willing to go to a bunch of other countries with easier visa laws. But Vietnam also requires a visa in advance but get around 1 million more visitors. Maybe the process is easier.

India is also pretty full on for those that never been to a develo country. I went to India right after East Africa and I was still kinda culture shocked pretty hard. The poverty is more in your face, the cities are way dirtier and it get pretty crowded. I think we saw at least 5 guy taking a dump at the river near the city when we return from our boat trip.

For naive travellers, you'll definitely get people attempting to scam you and even as an Iexperienced on I got scammed a few times without even knowing, at least it wasn't much.

Tourist infrastructure is ok but not as well established as Thailand and Malaysia from what I can gather.

India is definitely worth a visit with so many great places there but cities in general are filthy compared to the SE Asia.

Simple answer. India is a big country. If you need to tour India from north to south, it will take many months. On the other hand, once can visit Thailand and go from north to south and see a good variety of what the country offers in less than 2 weeks. Thailand is also very tourist-friendly and a mature tourism focused ecosystem. In the 3 months one can spend exploring India, one can tour SE Asia and visit multiple countries.

Second reason… safety. SE Asia is still safer & cleaner than India is. Especially for women. Not that nothing goes wrong in Thailand but in general, India is still not the safest country for women, especially foreign women. Whereas, in Thailand, Bali or Philippines, you don’t have to put as much effort in covering up your body or changing your dress attire, as men there won’t prey on you as much for “exposing” much skin. Sad but true.

India is a vast and diverse country with many unique attractions, but it has not been as popular for tourism in Southeast Asia as other countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.

This could be due to its size; India is much larger than these other countries which makes it more difficult to explore all of its different regions in one trip.

Additionally, India's infrastructure may not be up to par with some of the other nations in Southeast Asia when it comes to transportation options or accommodations.

Finally, there are certain cultural differences that can make travelers feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed when visiting India compared to their experiences elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Many North American tourists are vacationers lookibg for that stereotypical white sand beach island where they can drink a coconut or just hang by a hammock under the palm trees.

Southeast Asia has this reputation.

With regard to tourism, India and Southeast Asia are two different destinations for holidays. For a Dutch tourist it is not about infrastructures, developments or visa requirements. The question is what does the Dutch tourist want to do.

I write based on stories from my families, friends and colleagues who have been on holiday to India and Southeast Asia.

India is famous for their traditional architecture, culture and history.

These are often organized group trips. India is very diverse and has a great history. The many Indian palaces and temples are popular sights. The only disadvantage is that it is often pricey and there are few cheap flights to India. An organized group trip can easily cost 5000 Euro per person.

Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam are popular for beach vacations, backpacking and traveling independently. And of course there are also cultural sights. But flights from Europe to Southeast Asia are cheaper and are more frequent than in comparison to India.

The Philippines is less visited in great numbers. Perhaps because there are hardly any direct flights from Europe. I also think that little is known about Filipino traditional cultures. I have a certain image with India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. But with the Philippines I can think of anything.

Hm hm hm, it is not comparable to compare India which is not located in Southeast Asia with fellows from Southeast Asia itself. It is like we are comparing manggo (Indian is popular as best quality manggo producer) with durian (this heavenly fruit is native and originating from Southeast Asia).

India is situated at the Indian Subcontinent which is part of larger South Asia region alonh with Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. So if we want to better comparison, let's compare India with its fellows.

India actually is popular and famous for adrenaline seekers and special interest tourists. It has a great mountain with snow peak and some of those summits are enshrined as part of 30 highest summits in the world. Other than that, India has a very long history and civilization that left it with many incredible mosque, temple, and fortress.

India in my opinion just need more promotion and better packaging. India in some parts is not really safe, this will be consideration for tourist since we are going to other man's land for leisure and holiday, not for being raped, robbed, or tortured.

The conclusion is India is not even a Southeast Asian country. It receives many international tourist, around 4 or 5 millions per year with a quite high spending. Compare to Southeast Asian giants like Thailand and Malaysia which received more than 20 millions tourist, Indian one looks so small. However, with better strategy and its potential places for international market, in near soon India will run to catch up with other countries.

As someone else started by saying, I’m not sure I’m qualified to answer this - but will give it a try. I love SE Asia (visited Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar). It’s a gorgeous part of the world with fascinating culture and history and not overly challenging to travel in. I will admit that I did not travel alone to any of these countries - with friends in a couple of cases, and on tours in others. SE Asian countries all seem to be fairly easy to get around in, perhaps because many people speak English - useful for an older person like myself. India is more challenging if one is not a very experienced traveler. I have to say, in response to other comments, that the Indian visa process while unpleasant and time-consuming, had no bearing at all on my intent to do the trip.

India, perhaps because of its size, is more intimidating than the more compact SE Asian countries (well, except Indonesia). As bad as the traffic was in Jakarta and Bangkok, India makes that traffic look like childs’ play. At the suggestion of friends, when I went to India, I did so on a solo tour. I only toured the so-called “golden triangle” of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Varanasi, but quickly understood why the tour was important - there is a seeming level of chaos in Indian cities that takes some experience - or an ability to roll with punches - to travel there happily.

The downside of my tour was a lack of independence to wander around and get to know the place better, the upside was its predictability and that nothing was left to chance. I came away from my week in India very happy, indeed, that I made the trip. I’m dying to go back - as I am to also visit Vietnam and Laos, the countries I’ve yet to visit in SE Asia.

I love India (visited 6 or 7 times), and SE Asia (lived in Thailand, been to Cambodia 3 times and Indonesia twice).

I think the main reason is the cost and annoyance of getting an Indian visa. It’s better now with the 1 month e-visa (but one month isn’t enough to even skim the surface of a country as vast and varied as India). I can just rock up to Cambodia and pay $25 entry on arrival; Tourist visas are free on arrival for Thailand and Indonesia.
