Yellen says no federal bailout for Silicon Valley Bank
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. government took extraordinary steps Sunday to stop a potential banking crisis after the historic failure of Silicon Valley Bank, assuring all depositors at the failed institution that they could access all their money quickly, even as another major bank was shut down.
The announcement came amid fears that the factors that caused the Santa Clara, California-based bank to fail could spread. Regulators had worked all weekend to try to find a buyer for the bank, which was the second-largest bank failure in history. Those efforts appeared to have failed Sunday.
In a sign of how fast the financial bleeding was occurring, regulators announced that New York-based Signature Bank had also failed and was being seized on Sunday. At more than $110 billion in assets, Signature Bank is the third-largest bank failure in U.S. history.

This isn’t a lost cause. The bank has more assets than debts. The problem was just that they couldn’t sell them off fast enough.
Worst case scenario, billionaires have to wait a month or two for their money. I can live with that.

The time for a potential 2008-style bailout of Silicon Valley Bank in the US is over. The bank's charter is revoked, the stock of the holding company has tanked, and the assets are being run by the FDIC. Essentially, the bank is gone.
It's not like 2008 when banks were given big loans to stay afloat. Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, Citi, etc are all still around. They got bailout money to pay their debts. They kept their assets. They eventually paid the money back. They are still operating as banks.

Most of the money would be recovered with the sale of assets from the bank.
The big issue is time. Reviewing SVB accounts and assets and releasing funds is going to take time

Thankfully the rest of the banking sector is well-capitalized and there's bridge loan financing available from the Big 4. Payroll may be delayed but I'd be surprised if workers had to wait longer than Wednesday. The inconvenience and cost is very real but it'll be okay.

I feel like the risk to startups being able to make payroll is a vastly overstated problem. There's probably a handful of companies right at that Goldilocks size where they some how don't qualify for other financing options, but most of these businesses are of the size where securing a line of credit is as simple as asking for one. Timing is problematic, it can take a few days, but I don't think we're going to see anything close to the doom-and-gloom worst case scenario of a bunch of business shuttering over it
NonAggressive-Ask
Bailouts happen before a bank fails, not after the FDIC has already closed that bank down and taken possession of all it's assets.

Moreover, the bank's assets are fairly high quality, so depositors can definitely get back anywhere between 85% to 90% once they have been fully liquidated.

The ask is about kee the businesses who deposited money into this bank afloat. They won’t make payroll. They also did nothing wrong.

The bailout isn't for the business of the bank, it's for the people who have money in it. In this case, it's not a huge deal, as the bank has a shit load in assets, and will likely be bought out. This is not like other big recent financial failures.

65,000 startups (about 50%) were using SVB.
I work at a startup and luckily we were not using SVB.
What SVB has done is put 65,000 businesses at risk for failure and all the employees will not get a paycheck for who knows how long. I am sure all the executives have golden parachutes and millions or billions in other assets. Their rankings on the top billionaires list might drop, but they will be fine. But what about all of the workers?
All the people in charge should be held responsible. All the yachts should be sold.
They should also be paying a lot more in taxes - because at this point the government is working like an insurance company to take on all the risk whenever these bankers fail. And every time they roll back a regulation (as SVB lobbied for and won) the tax rate should skyrocket because the likelihood of a government bailout just increased.

The bank will go broke. No one is suggesting making investors and stockholders of the bank whole, they're suggesting that the bank should be able to return everyone's deposits.

No one is asking to bail the bank out. Fuck the bank.
They’re asking to save the depositors.
A quarter trillion in tech company runway and paychecks were saved there and was mostly uninsured. FDIC insurance is next to nothing for a company. It will save you enough cash for the pay and benefits for a receptionist.
A large part of an entire industry is about to start laying people off simply because they picked the wrong bank to store their money.

It won’t be a “bailout”. This time it’ll be a “government intervention to prevent the spread of contagion throughout our 100% totally healthy financial system”. Move along citizens. Nothing to see here.
SassyMoron
There's no need for a bailout, because the FDIC stepped in in time. That's how the system works.
You could say "transportation secretary announces there will be no federal bailout for motorists car damaged in accident," too. The reason would be, because the DMV made the drivers get insurance in the first place.
ManaPlox
The discussion is whether to do anything to backstop the people that had money in the bank. A lot of companies won't be able to make payroll or pay benefits for their employees if something doesn't get done. All those employees shouldn't go hungry just because their company happened to have their account at the wrong bank.
SVB wasn't wildly fraudulent or anything, they just didn't hedge their risk well

Everyone's missing the point. Nobody cares about saving SVB. The problem is that there are hundreds of companies that have their cash locked up in their SVB accounts (well in excess of what FDIC will insure for) and can't pay their employees. That's what needs intervention.

well - there are 724 billionaires in america - so SVB just needs to set up a GoFundMe & focus/market it to all those people - plenty of takers for sure!
